Royal Mail is set to axe around 700 management jobs as part of cost-cutting plans, the company has announced.

Bosses said the plans will reduce costs by around £40 million a year and they will start negotiations with unions over the proposed job losses.

The move came as the company revealed that staff absences peaked at 15,000 in early January due to the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant, which left some postal services struggling.

Royal Mail was one of the big winners from the Covid-19 crisis, with a huge surge in online shopping and deliveries.

However, the company revealed that the high peaks of last year eased off over the Christmas period as more shops were open, leading to falls of 4.9% in parcel revenues and 7% in volumes in the final three months of 2021.

However, this was still well up compared with pre-pandemic levels, at 43.9% in revenues and 33% in volumes, Royal Mail added.

Royal Mail chief executive Simon Thompson said: “With the rise of Omicron, absence has been around twice pre-Covid levels, with around 15,000 staff off sick or isolating in early January. Thankfully, this is now improving.

“We are resolutely focused on addressing these issues which have affected our service in some parts of the country.

Disgraceful that the video call to announce major change in operations took place at 07:30 in the morning when all the operators were not able to login because they were running the operation! What a way to treat people....Now all were hearing is 2nd hand information and rumour !!!!

'To go...' or being offered a chance to return to the ranks and go on 'delivery?'....that might fill in a few glaring gaps post the revision mess.

The more I am reading in the press and on workplace, the more I am beginning to see that the top echelon changes will be offloading the failures of Simon to act on data provided, onto former incumbents, and that they too will have been poorly served with poor data and management ways by the 700 to go, so no one existing in senior positions can be blamed. Just new brooms to push the same problems around onto the new 'smaller teams'

Reports the 700 will be from “Line management” & talks underway with trade unions.

How many sites are there in total? 100? so 7 managers from each depot?
(& all the temporary managers busted back down whilst the permanent ones are laid off as per normal redundancy situations i take it?)

Long overdue . It’s time these failed postmen/women looking for an easy life returned to the reality that is work . Far too many managers in my office . The top brass leaves early almost every day setting an example for almost all remaining managers to follow suit . Most days the posties return there is only one manager in the building while the rest are all away home after telling the office to clear and take extra lapsing . They run a rota where one “late man” manager stays until end of shift while the rest just pick and choose to suit themselves . A shambles from top to bottom and I’m glad the issue of incompetence is finally being dealt with .

Unite vows to fight threat to axe 700 Royal Mail manager jobs

Unite the union pledged today (Tuesday 25 January) to fight plans by the Royal Mail to axe 700 managerial jobs, after a £400 million giveaway to key shareholders.

Unite said its members were being made the scapegoat for the bosses’ failure to maintain deliveries during the two-year old pandemic which has led to the possibility of fines from the regulator Ofcom.

The union, which represents thousands of Royal Mail managers, said today’s restructuring announcement could impact up to 900 of its members overall in the delivery division and the threat of an industrial action ballot was now on the cards.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Coming on top of a record turn-around in the company’s fortunes, which resulted in the board handing over a £400 million giveaway to certain shareholders, this is cold comfort for those long months when postal employees were being badly hit by coronavirus at its worst.

“Unite will be giving maximum support to our members in fighting these unjust job cuts and this includes the possibility of an industrial action ballot. Now is the time for the top executives to reconsider their proposals.”

Chair of the Unite CMA FTR committee Gary Sassoon-Hales said: “We are appalled with the announcement today. The Royal Mail is running out of excuses when it comes to the rationale for management reviews. Our members can be forgiven for feeling that those working from home have been plotting to remove those who turn up and have ensured the future of this business during the pandemic.

“Unite CMA has not agreed with these proposals and will now enter into consultation. We will be feeding back the outcome of the consultation to our members who will then decide on what action to take next.”

Unite national lead officer for the CMA Mike Eatwell said: “Unite managers were no more immune from the risks of the pandemic than anyone else, but that did not stop them helping on delivery rounds when postal operatives numbers were severely depleted. The current leadership team’s fixation on headlines to shore up the share price is behind this latest attack on our members’ job security and we need to respond accordingly.”

Unite is dedicated to advancing the jobs, pay and conditions of its members and will fight back against any efforts to diminish workers' living standards.
