I notice that office based jobs have undergone a sea change since the lockdowns. Candidates are demanding more flexibility and WFH and employers are adapting to this in order to recruit (also lowers fixed costs for them). If the world of work is moving in that direction then RM better have something more in their locker than “it’s in your contract” if they want to retain staff. Not only will we lose weekends, I can see having 2 consecutive days off becoming rarer too if Sunday working becomes the norm. How can you fully engage with raising a family, for example, if you’re not around when the kids are home?citypostie wrote: ↑15 Dec 2021, 21:06The newest people in our office are now being given Sunday as rota day because there aren't enough volunteers, they are basically told it's in their contracts so have no choice. I'm sure if you book a day off to attend the next AGM you can ask the shareholders in person.
The machine stops.

Unless someone works in admin or payroll or HR at RM how is there job an "office based job"?ArtG wrote: ↑16 Dec 2021, 05:20I notice that office based jobs have undergone a sea change since the lockdowns. Obviously, being a postie isn’t a job where WFH is possible. What I’m saying is that work/life balance is becoming a big factor in the job market, another benefit to be considered along with pay and other conditions. I think that employers who want to avoid high staff turnover are going to have to be creative about it even in industries like ours.

It might well have the side effect of accelerating the use of automation in industries. In deliveries you should consider yourselves lucky to have better long term job security. For us most if not all of our jobs might well eventually be wiped out by automationArtG wrote: ↑18 Dec 2021, 03:49Obviously, being a postie isn’t a job where WFH is possible. The problem lies with us having to compete with Hermes, Yodel and DPD, all of whom deliver 7 days, are largely on inferior terms and conditions and bogus self employment is rife. It was always going to be a race to the bottom, which leaves workers and their families in a work centred life of little qualityArtG wrote: ↑16 Dec 2021, 05:20I notice that office based jobs have undergone a sea change since the lockdowns. Anecdote: Saw a self employed white van driver delivering Amazon parcels today. He had what I'd assume was his little boy with him, in matching hi vis vest and carrying a box as he followed along towards the delivery point. He was no more than 8.

Which is where RM wants to be - forget all the intentionally bland safe corporate speak of defending the USO etc etc...the company's long term plan is to be exactly like our competitorsredneck wrote: ↑19 Dec 2021, 10:13The problem lies with us having to compete with Hermes, Yodel and DPD, all of whom deliver 7 days, are largely on inferior terms and conditions and bogus self employment is rife. The "Defending the USO" is what it says defending the USO, it doesnt say what the USO will look like like going forward so if we drop to a 5 day USO from 6 Royal Mail will then call that "Defending the USO". Ultimately the USO is what Ofcom require as a service that Royal Mail provide be that 5 or 6 days or even 7.Hyrrokkin wrote: ↑19 Dec 2021, 17:24Which is where RM wants to be - forget all the intentionally bland safe corporate speak of defending the USO etc etc...the company's long term plan is to be exactly like our competitorsredneck wrote: ↑19 Dec 2021, 10:13The problem lies with us having to compete with Hermes, Yodel and DPD, all of whom deliver 7 days, are largely on inferior terms and conditions and bogus self employment is rife. most likely nothing, id imagine hes on a typical personal contract that is a just a salary with a clause that states "you will work the hours deemed necessary to fulfill the role" - very common in my previous industrynoggin1969 wrote: ↑13 Dec 2021, 15:14And how much does Achim Dunnwald get paid for working a Sunday or even a Saturday or does he get a weekend off every 6 weeks ?

Seen it too, at the height of lockdown last year no less. Almost Dickensian.
