They got legs – they know how to use them

COME rain or shine, six Basingstoke postmen will be baring their legs to the elements over the next year as they complete their rounds wearing shorts.

The colleagues have begun a one-year fundraising challenge to raise money for the North Hampshire Medical Fund, which provides additional hi-tech equipment to supplement that provided by the health service, and also promotes medical research, education and care.

Ian Higgs, 31, of Norn Hill, Oakridge, who has been a postman for eight years, came up with the idea and five friends, who work from Royal Mail's Priestley Road base, joined him by pledging to wear their shorts on rounds until the end of 2008.

Mr Higgs, whose rounds cover the Top of the Town and Riverdene areas, said: "Quite a few of us wear shorts in the summer and last year we had a bit of a competition to see who could wear them for the longest."

He added: "It does get quite cold, especially when you are out at 5am, but once you are moving around it is not too bad - although I think there is probably worse to come this month and in February."

The postmen have already been supported by some of the companies they deliver to and colleagues, families and friends have also sponsored them.

Mr Higgs said: "I've actually had a few people stop me on my round saying: You're mad wearing shorts'. I have explained why I am doing it and they have given me sponsorship money there and then."

Anyone who would like to sponsor the group can speak to them as they do their rounds, or alternatively send a cheque, made payable to the fund, to North Hampshire Medical Fund, Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Aldermaston Road, Basingstoke, RG24 9NA.

There are a couple of blokes in my office that still wear shorts out on delivery.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets
