When I started 38 years ago as well as working 6 days during Christmas pressure period you had to work Sunday.
The union fought hard to get that requirement removed

As a newbie my contract has Sundays snuck in. I've got my second one this week. Apart from long weekends Sunday is the one day of the week I get to see my wife and kids in the daytime. Royal Mail need to put Sundays in the advert, see how many people apply for jobs then

They are getting the tracked/specials and collections covered and it thrown off so u can do 2 days worth after your day off.

Not everyone is the same, you're right. Some will jump at working Sunday for £18/hr and be able to go to the supermarket or whatever in the week when most others are at work. Shopping on a weekend is hell!

The Sunday temps at our place get £18 (and guaranteed 8 hours irrespective of finish time), the posties get £14.98 and only paid for hours worked. This is why posties who were prepared to do it are now saying no.

If you are contracted to Sunday working you will get extra £5.86/hr for the hrs you're contracted for.

I'm the kind of person that would normally say that's an unhelpful unconstructive and ultimately rude response, but working conditions and morale have so collapsed in recent times that your comment was actually the first thing I thought to myself when I read "make Sunday just a normal day". The people running [into the ground] this company can just F off.

Having read the responses, i'm inclined to agree.

However i'll work every Sunday for you, but i'll take it as a Sunday to Wednesday contract with none of this late morning 11am starts. Realistically i'd want the actual ability to book annual leave too, not this current poop system we have now. Then i'd might stick around.

The thing is, there weren't many (if any) courier companies delivering on a Sunday back then. That's who's to blame here - the other courier companies that we have to compete with. Everybody now expects parcels to arrive on a Sunday, and we'll lose business to the competition if we don't keep up. Sad, but true. We're dancing to the tune of market forces.

The newest people in our office are now being given Sunday as rota day because there aren't enough volunteers, they are basically told it's in their contracts so have no choice. If they do this everywhere they will cover the Sundays no problem with no need to have a full scale dispute with people who don't have Sundays as part of their contracts
