The indoor workload has not changed one bit and in fact as we are now scanning all the tracks that come in - its actually increased in delivery offices.
I wonder if RM could find a way to "tag" a load of Tracked to a york or sleeve. If they were able to then they could possibly rig it so that the container (york or sleeve) is scanned and then all the Tracked in the sleeve or york would get a received at DO scan at the same time

Not sure how they would do that as every item has its own unique barcode? As letters are in decline I would imagine that RM would make greater savings in not having the mech sequenced if there is less than one tray's worth of mail and instead just have it sent to the delivery office un-sequenced like the 2nd wave
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

[quote.

Every year all senior mangers have to do a month in a delivery office. This'll stop all the stupidity they spout about things being do-able when in fact the ideas they come up with look like they've been designed on the back of a cig packet and are based off of hours saved through OPG's starting before their time, not taking breaks, dumping packets in bins so they don't have to write a card out, not using trolleys, running on delivery, writing cards out in the office before going out on delivery etc etc etc.

I would like to see this. Especially if it was managers in a DO. Put them on the worst duty for a month. Would give them a reality check

What's the bit you don't like?
Get rid of sick pay

Why should we lose one of the only actual benefits of this job ?
It costs the company money, in turn reduces job security and creates more work for others. My preference would be bonuses for those who have high attendance rate and the actual ability to book holiday as and when reducing the need to abuse the sick pay.
Imo i'd much rather have a positive work environment than sick pay, where tbf you would still get SSP anyway. This preference would mean harder workers end up better off, and the company does too.

You must be aware that people have differing immune systems etc, differing levels of “luck” in regards to how often they develop illnesses and such?

While that is true there is 100% people who game the system and take around 3 months a year as sick, it’s always the same people year in year out and it gives the rest of us genuine people a bad name. I’m in no way in favour of taking away sick pay but in an ideal world these piss takers would be denied sick pay.

Not all illnesses are visible and whilst we accuse the screws of acting as if they're medically trained we also play the same role to some extent. The only thing that gives us a bad name is falling for divide and rule tactics time and time again. Who benefits from undermining the veracity of someone's sick record? AND from letting the workforce carry out whispering campaigns which tend to bolster the culture in which they can be underhanded in dealing with sick absence as a whole?

Answers on a used Kleenex to the usual address.

Also in a positive work environment without such managers, anxiety and mental issues is/are less triggered at/by work, physical issues aren't as much of an issue either as a good employee working for a good company will be happy to go to work knowing that should any issues arise or get worse, then taking extra breaks, going home early, etc isn't frowned upon and actually encouraged by the managers.

Sitting at home on full pay does no good for the mind. It doesn't give responsibility, purpose, pride, etc, it allows people to rot away thinking they're safe. I've had 2 friends with various issues, both were always more positive and less self destructive when they had responsibility and purpose in their lives.

But a positive environment within RM just will never happen sadly. No amount of (realistic) pay will make floor staff happy, and that's all the CWU and RM can ever come up with. Pathetic and sad really.

I feel like we are past the point of no return. Simons job is to force through changes, appease the union and deliver results for the shareholders. Rico struggled to force through changes because he could never get the Union on his side. Simon has managed all 3.

So we are now where we are. Despite what we all think, Simon isn’t stupid. I’ve no doubt he’s fully aware of all the issues and it’s a case of smiling and pretending to listen....while still meeting those 3 targets.

As far as Simon and the board of directors are concerned Royal Mail is fixed and on course.

But in an ideal world:

-Rounds would be manageable within your contracted hours regardless of your contracted hours being 4 hours or 8 hours that day, regardless of whether it’s a quiet Tuesday or a heavy Wednesday.

-All rounds equal apart from a select few for new starters and those nearing the end of their careers.

-Proper training, proper equipment, good quality uniform.

-Accountability - from managers not paying you overtime, to us postmen leaving crap in the van. People should have to explain themselves and it go on their record.

-OT should be done on the PDA not on stupid pieces of paper, with the option especially for new starters and PTers to select ‘work to time’ if you don’t want to go over. No arguments, no pressure, no bullying, no harassment, no having to find a manager to say you can’t complete. You simply take what can be done in your time, the PDA has already notified your manager and the PDA shows your finish time anyway.

-Annual leave done automatically via the RM app, with instant decisions. Paper based way to remain for the handful who don’t use smart phones with an answer within a week. Again, managers to be conducted if they don’t give an answer within a week and leave holiday requests on their desk for months on end.

-The Union to explain themselves over the average holiday branch vote. I’d welcome other unions advertising their services to us, I’d happily pay double my current fees to someone like unite if they offered to take up our holiday pay claims to the very top court, instead of rolling over and agreeing to the ridiculous current deal like Terry and co.

-A weighting system where suitability for a round counts alongside seniority.

-Make SDs next day guaranteed instead of 9am/1pm.

-More trust given to us. Stop automatically believing customers over us when they claim not to have received a parcel when you know you handed it to them. Blacklist and permanently refuse to deliver to aggressive customers, those who can’t control their dogs and those who put in fake denial of receipt claims.
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

Agree with above, stop making it difficult to do the job as it's meant to be done.

Yesterday at 7.30am....
Me: I really can't work past 2.30 today, even if I'm out by 9 I'll bring things back with the amount of tracked
Manager: see how it looks later, it's too early to say.

9.00am.
Me: too much work here, I'll have to cut off unless someone takes some of my packets
Manager: oh, you should have said earlier. I'll see what I can do.

Manager disappears for half hour

9.30am
Me: I'm going out but at 1.30 I'm ditching letters, finishing tracked and coming back.
Manager: why didn't you say earlier?
Other postie: it's about the third time he's told you mate

Long pause

Manager (in a patronising voice): I know you've got "plans," but the mail is important. You need to get as much done as you can. I'll help you load it all into the van

Some great suggestions, especially the couple in bold, Pride seems non existent amongst most staff in my experience and Rm's last saving grace is reputation imo. Seniority will probably never change and wouldn't matter as such if every round was within 30 mins of each other. We can live in hope.

Define "suitability", and how is it measured? By who runs round and doesn't take their break and finishes quickest? By number of p739 returns (are they doorstepping them all)?

Seems this thread has made it over to Workplace, and Simon has a sense of humour, respect...
EDIT: Managers getting the hump with you guys on there.

I confess I rather like a few of the points made - some are a definite "no thank you" - which ones do you like? - please let us all know.
Word count - stop = 12, start = 2, Manager(s) = 7, Postie = 4, and perhaps a little concerning customer = 0 (zero).

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
