Dorothy who? It is an understandable reaction to a first sighting of the Power 100, 2008. Business men and women are more famous than they used to be, but it is still only a minority who become household names, and those that attain this dubious accolade may do so for entirely the wrong reasons. But while some of our top business leaders are famous, notoriety rarely signifies genuine business achievement. Without exception, however, all of those listed in the Power 100 are helping to make the success story that, largely, defines British business.

This is the fifth Power 100, the annual list of men and women who hold sway over British business. The survey has changed: originally, it put only directors of FTSE 100 companies under the microscope. Then it searched the boardrooms of the country’s 350 largest quoted companies. This year it has used the data on FTSE directors, but then looked beyond quoted companies. It acknowledges the role of private equity, the influence of government and regulators as well as the way that business is increasingly shaped by people outside the boardroom, such as bankers, headhunters, lawyers and the media.

Data has again been supplied by Hemscott, the specialist information company. Twenty names will appear each day from today until Friday.
