Royal Mail promising £200m special dividend
Royal Mail served up an early Christmas present, promising a £200million special dividend after online shopping-fuelled parcel profits.
But not all is rosy for boss Simon Thompson. He has seen export volumes dented amid EU border problems. Finance chief Mick Jeavons admits the 'extra level of friction' is ongoing and hopes it will 'stabilise' soon.
Meanwhile, Covid-related costs are reducing more slowly than hoped, with absence rates higher than normal and social distancing remaining a headache.
But chief among Thompson's concerns will be labour issues amid concerns that revisions to workloads have left mail undelivered.
The company is also investigating allegations unearthed by The Mail on Sunday that staff are routinely claiming hours they have not worked, including at its vast national distribution centre at Crick, Northampton.
The MoS has handed over information on further Royal Mail sites where whistleblowers claim 'ghost hours' are being logged by employees. The company declined to comment.

Social distancing remaining a headache?
Is this guy for real? He needs to turn up unannounced at some offices.

Agreed. Absolute joke from day one. C.W.U did nothing to change it either, shoulder to shoulder on the IWS, van sharing when 10% of the staff are sick with covid, half assed mask wearing rules. Health and safety area reps M.I.A. Never been safe, never a priority to be safe.

Probably the main reason of absence is Covid is still prevalent and recovering from Covid Virus may not be the end of Health issues.
Viruses are known to cause many health implications and with Covid being a nasty xxxxer it doesn’t take a Scientist to understand why the Sickness rate is high.
Yes,Covid is very inconvenient to business whose main concerns is Profit.
Royal Mail has certainly demonstrated this ,giving little regard to operating a Covid Safe working environment.
Yes,Rules where set in place (very late)but little was practiced with managers turning a blind eye and shrugging shoulders.
This week RM CEO has been quoted saying “our current absence - appears higher than it was during the pandemic”
Stating the Pandemic is past and over with is careless ,Covid is here to stay and unless RM management alter their attitude, I’m afraid absence will only increase.
