Re: The 7 day service thread

Post by POSTMAN »

Added to the 1st post.

1. What is being proposed?
We want to invest in a seven-day parcel service that goes everywhere in the country, at the same price. We want to offer ‘Sundays for all’, levelling up service provision and ensuring that every household in the UK, and every business whether small medium or large, can participate in the e-commerce revolution.

2. Why is this being proposed?
Accelerated by the pandemic, the world is has changed and customers are demanding more parcels and using fewer letters. Domestic parcel volumes are up around a third compared to pre-COVID, and customers are demanding more convenient deliveries, more often, and with greater control and visibility over when their parcel will arrive. Letters are in long-term decline, with volumes down by more than 60% since their peak in 2004/5. Posties are only delivering around a third of the volumes they were then – down from more than 20 billion letters to around 7 billion now – whilst the number of addresses they have to deliver to has grown by around 3.5 million in the same period. Given the significant changes we continue to see in the market, we continue to believe the best way to ensure that the USO meets customers’ needs is to rebalance what we do more towards parcels.

3. Does this mean that letters are no longer important to Royal Mail?
We love letters and believe there is an important role for them as part of the UK’s social fabric. But have to acknowledge that letter volumes are down more than 60% since their peak in 2004/5. So, it’s time to start defining what a sustainable USO is for the future.

My personal thoughts, be honest.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

DO NOT agree to a change in contract which includes mandatory Sunday working

I will be forced to leave if The CWU agrees to a change in contract. The option should remain flexible and voluntary, much like doing overtime on other days

Have to agree with you there mate, I dont miss 70hr weeks as a manager with reams of paperwork and 24hr emails and phone calls. As you say driving around the countryside delivering a few parcels and tracked on a Sunday. Count me in too!
Yeah I don't miss it at all and can totally relate to everything you've said. Weekdays at my delivery office can be chaotic to say the least but Sundays are a breeze I actually enjoy coming in for them.
But will you still enjoy it when it's just another working day, with volumes to match? Arguably, going forward, Sunday could become a busier day. As ever, it's swings and roundabouts. One man's meat's another man's poison etc.

I'm not against Sunday deliveries, but I wouldn't want to have to be doing them as part of my rota.

Part timers around here were recently offered to increase to full time hours if they accepted they'd work every Sunday. £18+ an hour for ten hours work was tempting - but only if it was the only day I was working!

It's not another working day though as you have no delivery just parcels. We are only allowed to take a maximum time on the PDA which takes us to a finish time of no later than 16:15. This is usually very generous and attainable meaning you are always back before time.
This could all change I guess but at the moment it's great and not pressured at all meaning you can provide a decent service to the customer.

You know how it is now, 'can you work your day off?', if we do Sunday as well 'can you work both your days off?' meaning we'd be forced into working 7 days a week, every week.
How can you be forced if you are being asked 'can you...?'

Say no!
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

It's different in my DO where there always seems far more parcels than anticipated and so it's a bit of rush to get them all delivered during your shift, I accept there's less hassle than a weekday job but how long will that last before there's a manager required to work as, like supermarkets etc, Sunday as will just become a normal day. Apart from agency staff we seem to have few volunteers in our DO with little interest shown in moving to a Monday to Sunday F/T contracts.

As far as somebody suggesting it's just writing out 739 cards, I find the opposite is the case and I've rarely written out any 739's on a Sunday as most customers are in.

It won't last, how long do you think they are going to let you deliver a FEW parcels, not long before the volume will increase & the short sighted one's who saw the big money, having a breeze.won't be able to back out cos you signed up, you agreed to work Sundays. Good Luck

It's whatever the PDA says you can deliver between when you go out and your finish time. On average I deliver about 40 rural parcels on a Sunday. This could be more if delivering in town but the time stays the same. You get an allotted time to deliver and have to be back to the yard within that time frame.
You could of course take a pessimistic view that it could all change which of course it could and at that point I would then assess wether or not to continue in the job or not at that point.

Ill have to have another look tomorrow, I thought that the total time for the route only showed once you have confirmed the route. It might be possible to scan the QR/barcode and then remove items from the manifest? I dont recall that being in last weeks training video though.

Hi.
You just add items in the RON and then optimise route to get your delivery time. You can then add further items to add more time or delete as appropriate. You need to put in a start point as well to generate the total time.

Just a thought guys,

Would this lead to a 4 on rolling 4 off working pattern for all?

While I would hate doing Sundays I could just about cope if this pattern was implemented for everyone.

A 35 hour contract would work out at 8hrs 45 mins ( 615am-3pm)
A 30 hour contract would work out at 7hrs 30 mins ( 730am-3pm)
A 25 hour contract would work out at 6hrs 15 mins ( 845am-3pm)

Would that be a good thing working a bit longer to have a rolling 4 days off every week, And lets not forget your holidays would stretch further, youd only need to use 4 days to get 8 off, and 8 days to get 16 off.
