Undelivered Christmas mail found dumped in bins

Dozens of Christmas cards and presents have been discovered dumped in a recycling bin in Norbury.

More than 80 items of mail, the majority of which were addressed to houses in London Road, were discovered outside Norbury library in Beatrice Avenue on December 27.

They included cards, hospital letters, bank statements, and even a DVD from Play.com that was likely to have been someone's Christmas gift.

Bronwen Steere, 45, found the four bundles of post in the bin after opening it up to throw away a piece of paper that had blown into her nearby drive.

She said: "I lifted up the lid of one of the bins and could see a pile of what I thought were recycled Christmas cards inside.

"But they were all wrapped in two red rubber bands the way postmen have them when they are delivering, so I picked the bundle up and realised it was addressed mail.

"There were three more bundles in there as well and a cardboard DVD. There were letters from hospitals and bank statements too, not just junk mail and Christmas cards. The red postman trolley was also discarded on the opposite side of the road in a flower bed.

"It's a really serious matter. I run a business and encounter regular problems with mail not coming."

Mrs Steere and her husband gave the discarded pieces of mail to the Royal Mail Investigation Unit, who confirmed they are looking into how the Christmas gifts came to be there.

One theory is that it may have been an agency worker employed by Royal Mail to help cope with the extra workload at Christmas, or that the postman's trolley with the mail inside was stolen.

A spokesman said: "Investigations are continuing into allegations that a small amount of mail was dumped in the Norbury area.

"We have a zero tolerance policy against any instances of dumped mail. The safety and security of customers' mail is of paramount importance to Royal Mail and its people."

Certainly don't hear it when they have to park yorkies outside in the rain because of lack of planning or too much mail in the system.
