A thieving postman dumped thousands of letters because smoking cannabis made him too tired to deliver them.
Craig Morris, 28, hoarded more than 16,000 items at his home over a period of six months.

He also burned some of the mail and stole cash from envelopes.

Morris, of Whitefield Meadow, Bamber Bridge, blamed smoking cannabis before or during his rounds in Preston for making him too "lethargic" to finish his deliveries.

He was caught out when mail he had abandoned was found in Deepdale in September.

Royal Mail bosses traced the post back to Morris, who had worked for the postal service since he left school at 17.

Investigators found 16,669 postal packets and ashes of burnt letters in an incinerator at Morris's home.

When quizzed, Morris said had acted out of "stupidity and tiredness." He was immediately suspended from his job at the Preston central delivery office.

Morris admitted charges of criminal damage, delaying the post and theft in a private prosecution brought by Royal Mail at Preston magistrates court.

Prosecuting, Sarah Wilkinson said: "This was mainly door-to-door postal packets - junk mail, but it's mail people had paid money for Royal Mail to deliver.

"Mr Morris indicated he had a £100 a week cannabis habit and was occasionally using cocaine at the weekend.

"He said he had been lethargic and stupid. He admitted burning mail in his garden aand said he had thought about buying a shredder."

Morris told investigators he had taken about £80 cash from letters he had opened.

Defence solicitor Winston Hudd said Morris had been a good employee until he developed a cannabis habit when he moved out of home 18 months ago.

Mr Hood said: "Cannabis made him lethargic and affected the way he was thinking and working.

"Three of the four charges related to junk mail which the majority of people put straight in the bin.

"Mr Morris kept it at home and it was gathering dust so
he made a half-hearted attempt to set fire to some of it."

Morris was jailed for four months, suspended for a year, for what magistrate Eamon McNamara called "serious offences which are a betrayal of the public."

Morris was also placed on a supervised order for 18 months and must do 50 hours unpaid work and pay £500 court costs.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We have a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and we will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.

"This stance is shared by the vast majority of our postmen and women who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely."

Methinks the spokesman is jesting. What happens to those managers who lie, especially to new recruits, or even :cfo & :lfo who are hardly honest?
