I scan everything I can. Catalogue? Scan it. Those little boxes on a redirection label? Scan it. Makes it look like Im doing more work
RM need to get the software on the CSS machines updated so that they go by the barcode on a redirection label if one is present, rather than the orange barcodes. Atm, only iLSMs and IMPs will read them barcodes. If updated then a lot more manual letters could then be run through the machines

Our customers pay more for "Tracked" items mainly so customers can track their delivery and have proof of delivery

A standard parcel that just has a QR code can also be used to track delivery and have proof of delivery if the postie scans it

So why are Royal Mail still offering customers the same service by expecting posties to scan everything but charge a premium for the other (the tracked items)?? :hmmmm

Because they are not....

Standard parcels that just have a QR (square barcode) do not provide full tracking. That is the disclaimer on Royal Mail's site. They even advise that customers pay extra for either signed for or Tracked for the reassurance.

So do your best to scan but don't worry if you can't scan everything

The only time I'll let a 2D barcode slip through unscanned is if it won't scan. Depending on how busy I am, I may input the stupendously long number manually.

I don't know many posties that bother doing all that!!

But if managers start pulling posties up for not scanning the QR codes I will remind them that our PDAs should have an additional option for all those standard items that get left on the frames everyday undelivered probably something like....."not delivered - due to cost savings"

MRM.COM : From Monday 4 April, all correctly barcoded parcels must be scanned on delivery. Fri Apr 01, 2016 1:06 pm Ignore the date lol

We have updated the software on your existing PDA to enable it to read 2D barcodes, in addition to 1D. As we begin to deploy the new PDAs, they can also read 2D barcodes.

And don't forget Rickeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey

RMCtv : Ricky McAulay : Trust is kept when we scan on the doorstep : The business receives over 1,000 Denial of Receipt complaints each week.

Scanning on the doorstep is part of our operations strategy to win in parcels. It will help us stay number one.

Competition in the parcels market is tough. Our competitors track all their parcels on delivery already, which means we can’t afford not to.

The data from 2D barcodes will also help us manage our business better. For example, we will be able to get paid fairly for our services and gather data about our parcels including volumes, weight, size and location. Over time, we will make this scanning information available to our customers.

What will help us stay number one is ensuring that all our parcels and letters are being delivered everyday

I stand by what I said. If the attitude or expectation of the business is that we should scan everything - then we should also be scanning everything (including standard and recorded parcels) that does not get delivered as well.

Does anybody know what is the definitive answer, are we supposed to scan every bar code, or just the Tracked etc items, as nobody seems to know the correct answer.
All items with a 2D barcode (QR) need to be scanned. They contain a lot of information and also provide proof of delivery. They are also now linked to PPI so the customer gets charged when the item is scanned. The information contained in them is used by other companies... Amazon and Ebay insist that their sellers use them and have a delivered target on their business sellers account, if this isn't reached then they are advised to use a different courier.

On the subject of scanning non-tracked packets, why does the PDA not give you the opportunity to leave these items in a safe place?

Yes good point, I wondered about that one as well, it needs changing to include safe place option.

It seems strange that there's a difference between MCs and DOs as to what gets scanned. For inward in MCs it's just SDs and Tracked that get scanned. Don't know if the outward gets scanned.

Got called slow compared to my floater, I asked to see scanning data because I knew that he only scanned tracked. Huge difference in data, now apart from him starting early, no break and driving like a loon we have a similar workload.

The expiry date printed on the labels could do with some formatting. With the old labels you could quickly glance at the expiry date. You'd sometimes see ones that had expired, the odd one by a good few months

In some DOs the redirections are left to the CSP guy to update. They get an update through the system and have to physically remove the Redirection Card & Labels from the Bundle that's allocated to each duty.

We used to keep that Bundle on the appropriate frame but the CSP Guy would spend ages wandering around trying to find where the necessary Bundle was, especially in larger DOs. Now they're kept in a central location and they only have to go there (IMO a better system). :thumbup

Most Posties normally give the expiry date a quick check (if they've got the time) when they're doing the Redirections. Problems sometimes occur when DOC or Holiday Cover are on the duty. Admitedly some Duty Holders are not as concentious as others. :whistle When we kept them on the Frames I used to like to keep a label when they expired, in readiness for all those Christmas Cards that are sent to the "Old" address. At least I could forward them as none have return addresses! :arrrghhh Nowadays I can't do that unless I aim off a bit because the CSP Guy's binned them all! :cuppa

Quick question. When an item is being redirected to an address covered by the same DO, why are they sending them to the MC only for them to arrive back the next day? Isn't there a central place in the DOs they they could be kept in? I don't know if some DOs expect the mech ones to be sequenced or walk sorted to the new address, as it stands CSS machines will sort them to whatever address is encoded in the orange barcode
