Is this a symptom of Sunday collections being cancelled.
Christmas mail was removed by thieves and ripped open after an Inverness post box became so full it was overflowing.
It had remained unemptied due to the two-day New Year holiday.
A Press and Journal reporter and photographer spotted letters spilling out of the box on the wall of the Royal Mail sorting office in Railway Terrace and called the police.
The reporter also called the Royal Mail later and was asked: "Who is guarding the mail now?"
About a dozen items heading for various addresses in the UK were opened and scattered on the pavement, allowing them to be soaked in the rain.
Eventually a Royal Mail manager was called to the scene to take charge of mail that had been gathered from the street or from the mouth of the box by the police.
Some of the letters were festive thank you letters while others contained business invoices.
However it was impossible to tell if any letters were missing.
Last night Royal Mail apologised to customers for the "unfortunate incident", saying that the items affected would be delivered with an apology letter.
Northern Constabulary officers were called to the post box at around 1.30pm yesterday.
Last night, a Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "Royal Mail would like to apologise to customers for this unfortunate incident.
"The items have been retrieved and will be delivered with an apology letter to the customers affected.
"The postbox has been emptied."
She added that bulky items and large volumes of postings are occasionally made to boxes which can cause it to become blocked.
She said: "We would urge customers not to post items into boxes that are full and to use an alternative box.
"We would also be grateful if they could contact our customer services on 08457 740740 and a relief collection will be arranged.
"Incidents such as this are extremely rare, and the security of the mail is of paramount importance to Royal Mail."
The post office had been closed for two days due to the bank holiday. It will re-open today.

I can top that.
A couple of years ago, I was off duty and cycled past an overflowing box, where a punter was pulling mail out onto the ground so she could put her letters in.
