Re: Question for the union.
No. It’s not even that.
We had our rep out the other week as 4 posties In our area have been recently sacked .
“The union think that RM are being too harsh with these punishments. We’ve sent a letter”
AFTER THE FOURTH ONE?!! YOU SEND A LETTER?!!
They hold absolutely no clout.

Re: Question for the union.
Being in the union is probably the lesser of two evils at this point. If too many people left the union then RM would probably de-recognise the union and then it would be open season for RM in making changes. We'd probably all end up on minimum wage with all allowances and paid breaks axed. Possibly everyone on zero-hours contracts, no option for delivery staff to cut off

Re: Question for the union.
What is the benefit of paying the union subs - do you get free solicitor representation when needed ?
Doncaster - the union rep works for the management benefit not for the union members so the above is the only benefit I can see. Is it this norm for the union rep to do their union duty full time and do nothing else i.e deliveries? Is it the norm for them to instruct the workforce of up coming stressful changes instead of taking the minutes of meetings and asking management key questions to protect the work force?

Re: Question for the union.
Well, there's UnionLine.
UnionLine is wholly owned by the CWU & GMB and provides a full range of legal services and benefits to all CWU members, this includes personal injury and employment law claims, free simple wills, preferred rates for probate & Powers of Attorney, fixed rate conveyancing, as well as an advice line that covers any legal matter. We have also introduced a motor legal service, a criminal and regulatory service, family law service and a dedicated Scottish Law firm service. We provide free legal advice, case preparation and merit assessments to members, and work alongside union officials to find the right negotiated solutions where appropriate.

Re: Question for the union.
What you are talking about are union representatives, the membership are the union and the reps are only as strong as the support they get. If you are not happy with the level of representation you are getting call a meeting, if you are not happy with what your rep is doing stand against him and give your time for free. The best reps are the ones who know when they deal with office issues, the people on the floor are backing them. Rather then rant at your keyboard go out and do something constructive and support the union in your office because you get back what you put in.

Doug the membership are drained from the pressure of the pandemic etc and then this . Structural and tabletop revisions at the worst time you could implement these , staff are stressed , worn out and peed off . Its embarrassing .

Re: Question for the union.
The silence from the union is nothing to do with the office representatives, it is the silence from CWU HQ that is deafening.
Royal Mail
failing the workforce, failing the public and deliberately failing mail on a daily basis for too many years.

Yes you can stand against the rep but how effective can a unit rep be without any support at a higher level.
My Branch is like a private members club and if your face doesn't fit then you are barred.
"You get back what you put in" That's not even funny.

Re: Question for the union.
I agree with Clash 100%.
There are systemic weaknesses and flaws within the structure of the union both at branch and national level that are not only allowed to fester but are actively encouraged to do so because they are useful in protecting the positions of those in power.
These flaws and weaknesses are what undermines trade unionism and blaming the members is a handy tool to enable that.
If an area rep is ignores one delivery office what power does that DO have to affect change? Now think about an individual member, a part timer, not long in the door.... The members are the union?
Bollocks.

Re: Question for the union.
Moons ago I know of an office, about a quarter of them that wrote to a branch about a union rep, the letter was ignored.
What communication was given about the communications job at the communications union?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
