Gym'll fix it

Firms told to offer free memberships
By Vincent Moss Political Editor 30/12/2007

Bosses will be urged to give staff free gym membership in a Government drive to improve workers' health.

Firms will also be encouraged to install showers so staff can jog or cycle to work in a bid to cut the 175 million sick days run up every year.

The proposals will be announced early next year by Health Secretary Alan Johnson.

The move reflects concern in Downing Street about the 600,000 people who claim incapacity benefit because they are unable to work due to ill health or disabilities, and Mr Johnson believes that number could be cut drastically.

He believes bosses should act out of "self-interest" because a healthier workforce would be a more profitable workforce.

The Health Secretary, a former postman who walked miles every week in his old job, said it was "incredible" that so many days were lost each day to sickness.

His proposals will be unveiled as the Government prepares to release the findings of a two-year study into the health and lifespan of the workforce.

The report, by Dame Carole Black, a former president of the Royal College of Physicians, will warn of the risks facing those who take too little exercise.

It is also expected to show that wellbeing is improved by taking a job instead of staying at home on benefits

How the hell can Johnson spout on about lost days due to sickness.
That plum and his labour cohorts have overseen the destruction of
our working conditions cunningly disguised as the new agreement.
Expecting us to do more work for less pay.
Well iv'e news for them, when they begin to implement the agreement,
watch the sickness levels go through the roof.
They are bad enough now, they will certainly get a lot worse.
By the way i do realise it was RM and our illustrious union leaders that
negotiated the deal, but i'm sure not without some govermental pressure
to accept i'm sure. :lfo :cfo

If not pressure I certainly think a "scratch your back scenario" would not be beyond the realms of possibility.

This is of course only my opinion for you

What a tosser!

Personally, by the time I've finished whatever route I'm on, maybe a little bit of OT if I have the energy, then got home & walked the dog (2 or 3 miles), I am knackered!
Add the general housework, shopping, etc onto that & there is no way that I'm fit for anything, never mind have time for anything else apart from my bed at 9pm.

It's a long time since Johnson was a delivery postman - in the days when walks were shorter and lighter.

Komityet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti is no longer - disbanded in 1995 by Boris Yeltsin - now it is the FSB, a much friendlier organisation

We don't need more exercise in our job, we get enough of them with all the throwing in mail, and walking and carrying the pouch. If they still want me to do more exercise, get me couple of randy babe :) ie Jessica Biel :)
