Monday - Friday deliveries ????
Once in a while you can catch our DOM in a chatty mood.
She revealed that, in her opinion Saturday deliveries will cease maybe as early as the middle of 2008 leading to massive job losses across the board.

Not the first time this has been mentioned on here and at offices. If you think about it how many businesses have deliveries on a saturday, not many i reckon. Can see this happening in the future for sure and this would get rid of the need for cover duties which could save RM loads in the future. Dont think this would leave to load of job losses as they arent exactly replacing staff that have left now so by the time if it comes in they would probably have the numbers needed anyway

IS THERE A POLITICAL WILL THOUGH
I can see it happening but not this year as they would have to change the USO and in the current political climate of closures of POs and the strikes ongoing and upcoming, not forgetting the national strikes, I just don't think they would have the round objects, in parliament to let them even try it.
However, if it was left up to AL and AC they would try to do it tomorrow if they could.

I can see it happening too, but not in the very near future. RM will have to wait for the latest f*ckups...opps, sorry, changes,TrueBlueTerrier wrote:I can see it happening but not this year as they would have to change the USO and in the current political climate of closures of POs and the strikes ongoing and upcoming, not forgetting the national strikes, I just don't think they would have the round objects, in parliament to let them even try it.

The old Mon to Fri chestnut.
Discussed on here before after i posted up a News item from some printer/mailing dudes conference.
They had a heart attack as someone from postcon was quoted as saying we would only deliver Mon to Fri.
But what was said was summin about a 5 day week, and Tuesday was the day to be knocked.
The thing is,i can see Sat getting worse and the Mailsort which is OUR big earner being pushed out on a Sat.
These mailing companies love Sat as it gives their customers time to browse the s**t they send out over the week end.
I would say losing Sat is a big no no,but as you know, nothing suprises us in this game.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I proberly have more chance of winning the lottery in 2008.......it could happen and has indeed been "doing the rounds"at offices and on the forums. As TBT stated the USO would have to be changed,postcom/postwatch will not allow that, the union should in theory be against it as well,it'll take away the "rolling day cover"duties, although i think people would be killed in the stampede if volonteers for redundancies were called for.24601 wrote:Once in a while you can catch our DOM in a chatty mood.

It would indeed save RM a small fortune in derv, heating, lighting ect,but a skeleton crew would still be needed at DO's as some firms would insist on the right to at least collect their mail if Saturday deliveries were to cease.

Re: Monday - Friday deliveries ????
I think the Mon - Fri delivery is a definite goer - the 40,000 job losses aren't solely coming from mechanisation I'm sure. Postcomm are in favour of a 5 day week and there is about to be a discussion on the USO and although Postwatch is against I believe they are about to be swallowed up and watered down. It would take legislation as it stands but that is not really an obstacle. MP support? - well our MP gets at least 1 SD on Saturday but doesn't have a letter box!disheartened wrote:I proberly have more chance of winning the lottery in 2008.......it could happen and has indeed been "doing the rounds"at offices and on the forums.

I doubt very much they'll get rid of any weekday delivery and like Postman says, Saturday is too luctrative ... and it is an ideal opportunity for competition - they could take a lot of our business and just do one saturday delivery. All week to sort it and collect the junk and then Starburst it like they do with the freebie newspapers around here.
Saturday won't go :(

unfortunately these two are in charge , the courier companies take their parcels out early , and Reggie & Archie do what Postcon , EEC and New Labour tell them. They're not going to kill the goose that lays the golden egg and Big Al might want to buy something other than supermarket chains in the future ?

Personally would love mon - fri. Would gladly give up my rest week for it. No shortage of volunteers for evr, RM get the job cuts. We get a weekend. Still think we should sort first class mail for a Saturday collection (by customers) from the sorting office. Gives us some OT and they can still get important stuff. Everybody happy.
