Large and heavy parcels 7.5 ton driver (hernia)

Post by Macromiller »

Have been working for 7 years with Parcel force as a 7.5 tonne driver and finally after all this time loading and unloading 30 kilo plus onto my truck (with out a tail lift) which really should be pallet work my body has Brocken and I have been diagnosed with a hernia , my doctors advised me to see the occupational health advisor and told me I have to stop lifting heavy parcels, this is with out a doubt a work related injury and I now feel I need to be put on lighter duties I’m am a otherwise fit 62 year old does anyone have any experience with this process ?

I did put my back out once and was off for a month. It happened when I had a hire 7.5 tonner with one of those fold down tail lifts with the ramps on the end. I was folding it back after a delivery, twisted and my back went. I was bent over and couldn't stand up. Cut a long story short, was off for a month had to have physio at hospital etc.
One of the reasons I left was the weight of stuff, Screwfix rads at 60kg or heavy over loaded Card Factory boxes that split as you look at them.
Came back on 'light duties', in a Sprinter with a days work, not really a light duty 🙄.
Anyway,I transferred to RM Network to drive Class 1 and 2's, only have Yorks to push now and even some places I go to the trailer gets loaded/unloaded by indoor staff or just a trailer swop (ie Parcelforce Cov or Chorley to an LD) with no manual work.
I now have a better quality of life, although it's shift work starting/finishing at stupid o'clock sometimes I'm on a lot more money and more time off. Win,win ☺️
I hope you get sorted. Regarding heavy stuff,If you can't comfortably lift it ask for help. If not it stays where it is,van or the floor. You'll be surprised when you get help then 😉
Ex-PFW currently Network Driver.
