'Has anyone thought of asking the staff to do even more?'

I'm probably not the first person to think of this - I presume some ancient philosopher remarked on this and perhaps even coined a name for it: if you believe you've come up with a really simple answer to a problem that shockingly no-one else has thought of before, you probably don't understand the situation at all.
Bravo Mr Rush... there is however a technical term for staff doing even more?' - its called FANTASY!

I had a quick look before I left.
Of the 20 duties in my section about the equivalent of 5 duties hadn't gone out. (1/2 a duty here a row there etc)
To clear it would take a minimum of 22 h 30. Assuming I didn't slow down at any point. You know - get tired or need sustenance or a wee wee.

I will clear the office when Nick comes and shows me the way. I will be right behind him for every minute of those 22 hours needed.
Pen pushers don't you love them?
Inadvertently you have a point here, why not get all these pen pushers and people with stupid nonsensical jobs to go to their local office to help clear the backlog, I’m sure Royal Mail would survive a week or so without all these people and then when all this nonsense is over we can evaluate who we missed and who we didn’t. Everyone’s a winner baby as Hot Chocolate told us ages ago.

Review the special delivery times as the 1 o'clock and 9am times makes clearing a duty impossible.
Why not apart from rural areas send a van, maybe 2 if needed out with all the SDs early on, then no need for any walk to break off for an SD
We don't have the resources to send anyone out with the 9am specials, let alone 1pm's, due to being cut to the bone.
I have thought of someone who is spare and not doing anything most of the time. Get the DOM out to deliver 9am Specials and Large Lumps maybe even some of the Tracked help lighten the load and maybe improve staff morale. Oh and on his way back pick up some of the DSO's then he might be out long enough to justify his wages

We used to have a manager who did this sort of thing, even 'helping out' on the IPS. Except the only thing he was helping out was hours from the office...

These days I get the impression that managers have to account for every last single hour that they use (at least in MCs), what's it like in RDCs and DOs?

I hear what you're saying Denham, but it's a double edged weapon. In theory Managers are not meant to do Posties work. This has been supported by the CWU. They don't want managers taking your work away from you. Perhaps if CWU HQ was snowed under by paperwork they might allow some Friendly Managers to come and help "Them" out? :whistle

However IF Managers are doing Posties work... Throwing of Walks... IPS ... etc it's meant to be recorded by the Unit CWU Rep (Don't know who he has to tell) but I can't se him following the DOM around the unit making notes, and he hasn't got the time.

I agree with you, and TBH most of our DOMs have helped out in the past with Prep and in some cases Delivery. It's normally been their job to shoot out early with the 9am Specials. I get the feeling it's how much pressure the DOM's under to try and make his DO work, in case he gets moved? :cuppa
Like all Wage Slaves, he had two crosses to bear: The people he worked for and the people he worked with! (Stephen Vizinczey.)

Management should be moving people around the office to help out on the deliveries that have ended up falling behind. That's if they are falling behind because of excessive mail/packets etc not because someone is just swinging the lead and being deliberately lazy and slow.

It's called being a manager and managing your staff and workloads on a hour by hour day by day basis.

Never been in a business like this one where next to no one helps anyone else and managers actively encourage that type of behaviour then go about pressurising the poor sod who's swamped to work at unsustainable speeds and stay out till it's finished or end up being harassed for ever and a day till they break and never complain again.

What a p!ss poor way to work.

Delivery Office Agreement

Managers performing OPG work

A meeting was held between XXXXXXX, XXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXX, XXXXXXX, and XXXXXXXX on 20/04/2011. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the forthcoming fully bundled revision and other office issues. Obtaining a 'true reflection' of where our office is prior to the fully bundled revision and beyond, and Managers' carrying out indoor and outdoor OPG work was discussed. Following on from this meeting another meeting was held between XXXXXXXX(DOM) and XXXXXXXX (CWU) on 16/05/2011 to jointly draw up a local agreement. The following standards have been agreed;

1. Managers will not take on any kind of OPG work, unless under extreme circumstances where the USO is considered to be under a severe threat.

2. A daily meeting will take place between the local management team and the local CWU Rep to discuss if there is a threat to the USO and of any need for managers to carry out OPG work.

3. Any OPG work carried out by managerial grades will be logged and signed off by the DOM and the local rep whenever (2) is deemed necessary.

4. A joint CWU/RM report of OPG work undertaken by managers at Delivery Office will be sent to the DSM and the CWU Area Rep providing a demonstrable account of what work was carried out and why. Traffic levels and staff profile for the affected days will form part of this report.

It's a local agreement.
Every office should have one.
If you want one go to disagreement over the use of the Indoor Work Tool until you get one.
How can you have a true reflection of Indoor Work if the tools are doing the work.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

It's true, seen it, witnessed it, personally been put through it. The only company I've worked for that has managers that bully and harass the OPG's that have the biggest workloads and, more often than not, are the most conscientious and take pride in doing the job correctly.

Thank fuc£ I'm out and working for a company that's completely different in it's approach to its workforce and it shows in how much happier the workforce is.
