Low letterboxes

Post by annem »

Hi,

Am I right in hearing that new builds cannot have low letterboxes anymore? If so, that's great.
However, I've noticed a lot of my customers (not living in new build houses) who decide to buy a new door are opting for a door with a low letterbox. In fact, one of my customers said the company they bought the door from pushed this option onto them.
Why can't these low letterbox doors be banned altogether? Can the union not do something about this otherwise we face a future of low letterboxes when people change their doors.

Easy to sort, knock on the door when you get to one and hand them the post stating you cant get to the low letterbox, theyll soon put a box up for you.

it was proposed in the commons to only ban new builds fitting low level boxes, remember watching it as it was during an up coming general election i think, nobody in politics is intelligent enough to think that the millions of already built houses will also think about getting a new door

I don't think the banning of low level letterboxes on new builds has made it into law yet, the review of building regulations
which was required following the Hackett Review (Grenfell fire) is hopefully going to sort this issue. When those building regulations are finally updated.......who knows.

As for new doors on on old buildings I similarly use 2yearpostie's method. I've often had the response 'Well I have to pick
it up from the inside' to which the response is 'Try doing it 30 times a day'.

Also the manufacturers of these low level letterboxes seem to make them with springs that are significantly more
difficult to lift and draught excluding on the inside which is significantly more resistant to mail being
pushed through - I therefore can't help it if the mail is not in as such good condition as it should be then can I?

I have a relative who is a window & door salesman, part of their patter is the door will be stronger with a low level box, the low level boxes on my walk I put the mail in sideways/longways, but not visible, so the customer has to get down as well :dance

The latest idea for new builds is to place a "security flap" on the inside which prevents anything but the smallest or foldable letters being posted through the door .. it is impossible to get Covid test kits or magazines of substance through the door .. ridiculous to have to P739 a National Trust Magazine for example .. when I questioned the occupier about the obstruction it appears these measures have been "sold" to the tenants as security against .. and I quote .. "people pushing fireworks through your letterbox" .. I'm not sure I'd have necessarily seen that as a selling point which encouraged me to move into that particular neighbourhood personally

How would you explain that one when they stop answering the door and your bringing their mail back?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I have done just that on several occasions. Callers office won’t thank you either but it’s just following procedure at the end of the day.
