Could potentially be when casuals box up the mail. If it's come off a CSS and it's upside down, one it's gone through an iLSM or IMP upside down, it has to stay upside down. CSS machines go by the orange barcodes, if the barcodes aren't in the corner that it expects to find them it'll reject it.

They come in 9 times out of 10 with no base. In any case we don't have the time to go hunting for bases so if it comes in without a base, it'll go out without a base. It's also no different from if one of them new grey sleeves is used

Redskins with broken springs so as you empty them they don’t raise up and you end up having to bend right over time and time again to get the packets at the bottom. When they are empty it’s obvious the springs are screwed so how hard is it to replace it with a working one?

If we had spares we could, why do you think we send so much stuff out in cardboard sleeves these days?

The only way we'll find time is by making the dispatches go out later.

RM don't seem to be sending out bases any more as we only have the sides available now, so possibly RM have decided nationaly to stop using bases.

If any packets in the sleeve are over iirc 2.5Kg in weight then the bases are not to be used anyway and it's rare not to have at least 1 packet in a sleeve weighting at least 2.5Kg.

If your local MC sorts their packets on a PSM then they can't use the bases anyway with a PSM. As more and more MCs get PSMs installed RM will have to get rid of all the bases anyway.

The only time that you might find people "walking around doing sweet fa" is early on in the shift when we have a gap in lorry arrivals. Can you honstly say that DOs don't get many people "walking around doing sweet fa" as well? Don't know about other MCs but locally you'll get move around the different work areas depending on what the workload is like in the different work areas.

Don't forget that soon there's going to be a lot more stuff with barcodes on. On nights we only scan Tracked and SD items. Traffic for other streams just gets recorded as x number of yorks/boxes. If RM ever wanted us to scan absolutely everything with a barcode we'd need at least double, maybe at least triple the number of PDAs that we currently have

How hard is it to remove expired redirections instead of continuing to forward them ?
How hard is it to put multiple ones for same address in a bag ?

Doesn't matter if you don't have spares - cardboard shrouds and broken shrouds should not be sent as they are an H&S risk and are banned unless senior managers give direct authorisation for the cardboard shrouds.

I agree but that's not a H&S issue.

If this is a result of an official direction from above, MCs may soon be getting cardboard shrouds with no bases sent back.

I mean its only been 14 years since they were banned viewtopic.php?t=4276

Your right it isn't , but the opening post was about presentation of the mail.
In hindsight I probably should have quoted that.

Continuing down the off topic route -

1. Not hard at all, basically not doing the job correctly.

2. Getting harder as it's getting more difficult to source the plastic bags, perhaps
RM are being 'green' and getting rid of them. As there always seems to be loads of labels
left when a redirection expires perhaps this is the right route to go down.

With using cardboard sleeves I'm afraid it's just tough luck. If that's all we have then that's what'll be used. Red sleeves with broken springs are no different from using grey sleeves which go all the way down.

I'm afraid we'll all need to get used to cardboard sleeves not having bases as the bases can't be used with PSMs. If there's any packets in a sleeve that weigh over 2.5Kg then again the bases can't be used.
