Heat...Good old health and safety

Post by Peejay8T8 »

I was wondering. Working in the afternoons at the height of the temperatures and sun, being asked to take 3 loops of lapse because "your indoor works all ready and there are no vans until 2". Has this been risk assessed? It doesn't seem very healthy or safe for staff, especially older staff with weight issues

RM policy is - you must complete your lapsing before you are allowed to collapse with heat exhaustion

Don't think there's very much that RM can do as at any given DO you've got a fixed number of vans. Until social distancing is done away with by RM (not seen anything confirming that RM is doing away with social distancing) then some staff will have to either start in the afternoon or make their own way to the start of their walk. As it stands, van share is not an option

Obviously but what does that have to do with H & S?
It's an employers legal duty to ensure their employees are safe.
And delivering in 30 degree heat for 5 hours in the middle of the day sure isn't safe, or healthy.

All our hire vans went back on Saturday, we're back to van sharing tomorrow.

Someone mentioned in a thread recently that van sharing now won't happen

Do your Tracked and Specials and then collapse - that appears to the the level of care from the company.

Pretty much what I was told this morning.
Got a bit of a dicky heart and was already getting chest pains by 8am, Manager comes out to where I was cooling off and says if I start struggling it's not a problem, just get the tracked done!

The heat is a more than good excuse for not taking any lapsing, I'm proud to say I have never once taken any absorbing :thumbdown

Our office does it the other way, with the FULL backing of the rep.

Lapsing MUST be done and you are expected to do it before your duty. if you fail anything it must be from your own duty.

Get a new rep.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Same in ours! There's no escaping it. They've done us a massive favour by having someone do our indoor work/prep while we're doing our 3 loops, cooking up a melanoma in the midday sun. Cheers for that
