More 2D barcodes – please remember to scan correctly

To ensure customers can put a barcode on their parcels, we are introducing a new label solution that will see more barcoded items in our network and help prevent lost revenue.

It also increases the importance of scanning throughout our pipeline – including the vital scan at the doorstep when they are delivered.

Currently, online business account customers who do not use a shipping solution apply an unbarcoded PPI to their items. This leads to revenue leakage as every single item cannot be checked.

That’s why we’re launching “Basic Barcodes” which supports 2D barcodes becoming mandatory on RM24/48, First Class and Second Class account parcels and large letters.

Basic Barcode labels contain a unique barcode so that each individual item can be traced back to the posting customer account and reconciled against what they declared. This will help ensure we get fairly paid for all the items we process and deliver.

Everyone has a part to play to make sure this is a success by continuing to scan all barcoded items at every point throughout our pipeline.

You’ll start seeing the new labels – which you can see in the picture above – from August.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Wonder if they're going to update the software on the STAR guns to enable them to scan 2D barcodes. On the subject of barcodes, I wish they could adjust the software on CSS machines so that they can read the 2D barcodes on official redirection labels so we don't get so many rejects

Once this kicks in, it'll be just foreign, meter and stamped mail that won't have 2D barcodes on that contain the destination address. Can't see that being the case in 5 years time

I know it says they should be scanned throughout the pipeline but I don’t think they will need a ready for delivery scan. If they did what would differentiate a tracked parcel from any other parcel? They would just be sabotaging one of their own premium products.

The only streams that get scanned throughout the pipeline are: Tracked, SDs, International Tracked, International Tracked and Signed (don't know about International Signed).

I've only had less than 10 (I think) of these new barcodes myself, but I must admit they scanned nicely. They were well presented on the item's though, unlike some 2Ds that are crumpled or wrapped around the packet, as noggin says above.

Had one today, originators printer must have been running out of ink though, but still scanned ok.

As an aside, does anyone have any trouble with the 2d barcode on 'Joules' packets (they're plastic packets
which are part white and part green). I can never get the 2d to scan and always have to scan the
the 1d barcode.

Sometimes on the Tracked some of the 2D barcodes on packets from very don't scan properly, the PDA thinks they're in the wrong work area

Why are "basic barcode" (which we pay more for than click and drop) not able to be delivered tracked.
If you put the details into track and trace all you get is this is not available on this service (that being basic barcodes).
The 2d is printed on the label but useless to the sender ...Again we pay more per letter for this service and it seems RM is just being difficult when it could easily be implemented.
