Is it possible to transfer from postie to HGV driver with training payed for by the company?

Post by Jim_Hanc »

Wondering if it’s possible/likely to be able to transfer from my role as a postie to getting trained as a HGV driver, with training/licences payed for by the company.

I’ve worked for RM for about 4 years now but know surprisingly little about internal transfers, training available etc. Although I do believe a couple of people from my office have done this or something similar in the past.

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks :thumbup

Judging by the search I just did on here, the answer is no.

We've had 1 or 2 processing staff transfer over to distribution, driving 600s, no idea though who paid for their training for (AFAIK) a Cat 2 licence

With the national shortage of drivers across all industries not just RM, I would imagine there would be some changes

I don't know if there are local agreements to provide this training elsewhere in the country but I know for a fact colleagues of mine who have very recently transferred to hgv driving all paid for their own training.

I think there was something in the Four Pillars agreement where the company would run training campaigns. That agreement seems to be in the bin now though.

Unfortunately No , I paid £1500 to gain my class 2 licence (including 5 years CPC ) and now drive a 600 (7.5t) .

My car licence did not include 7.5t as I passed my driving test in 1998 (grandfather’s rights ended in 1997)

I could have just done the 7.5t test but it was the same price as Class 2 so I pushed myself and it was worth it

In my experience it was worth it because I went from Postie to driver and basically with allowances and overtime it has paid for itself so I would say go for it :Very Happy

The CWU ULR peeps had HGV training years ago at a 1/4 of the price.
