Good news lies beneath the announcement that the price of postage is to rise sharply next year.
It is, of course, hard to see why we must pay more for a deteriorating service, with only late, single daily deliveries and no Sunday collections.
When in 1937 readers sent presents via The Daily Telegraph to 200,000 children of the distressed unemployed, thousands of parcels were delivered on Christmas morning.
Today, Christmas anxiety is augmented by the worry of whether presents ordered online still have a chance of being delivered by Christmas Eve.
But 2008 sees a sure-fire investment opportunity to bring a six per cent return overnight. Just buy as many stamps as you want marked "1st class" for 34p each at the end of March. In April they'll each be worth 36p. We can all be rich - as long as no one tells the Royal Mail far enough in advance to spoil it.
