area union reps waste of time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
have been a postie for6 years,I dont blame people for going on strike the thing that annoys me is the area union reps they keep banking on strikes, why because they are looking to keep ther jobs i ma based in South Lincolnshire and our rep is a complete incompetant
I asked him that if we go on strike and not get payed (i have to pay my mortgage)then will he withold his salery his answer was no which i think proves my point he thought that i was having a joke. The problem is that if you want to make a stand every one other is behind you which they aint.I Think that the union have got to sort themselves out what am i paying my money for just to keep him in a job anyway hope that every postie is having a good time there are worse jobs out there I.E shift work and if we dont watch out we will all be in a factory sod that!!!!!!!!!!11anyway said me piece and off me soapbox

Do you still have to be a member of the Labour Party to be a political officer?Big Daz wrote:I am your branch political officer.![]()
Why do you feel your rep is incompetent, have you thought about putting in for the CWU rep post when it comes up again early next year?
The question to our Area del rep has me puzzled, are you saying that he wont lose a days pay if we have strike days?

To be honest im not sure, someone on the old CWU forums said that that was no longer the case but i havent checked it out yet. I joined the labour party so as to be political officer and ended up becoming involved as the Postmans Federation was one of the founding unions and i wanted to be part of the battle to keep the labour party as the party it was set up to be.
The PF merged in 1920 with ? to form the Union of Postal Workers which became the Union of Communcation Workers after a name change.
Will investigate your question though.

Thanks. I was just curious really. A few years ago when I was office rep, I asked the question of the branch secretary and was told I had to be a member of the Labour Party. I think we might find ourselves disagreeing on the nature of the Labour Party, but life would be boring if we all thought the same way.

Nature of the labour party or the labour goverment or labour MP's. Is it not true that the party is judged on the actions of a very small minority of members, those that form the goverment.
Is it not true to say there is no room for disagrement on what the nature of the labour party/goverment should be rather than what it currently is? I belive that in the mad quest for the centre ground the goverment has forgotten about those it leaves behind, the working class whose voice it is supposed to represent in parliment. Look at labour party policy as made at its annual confrence and then look at goverment policy they are a fair bit different. The goverment tends to ignore the policies that are made at labour party confrence as its under no legal obligation to implement these polices! Any hope of that changing went out the window when the labour MP'S failed to nominate John Mcdonnel in enough numbers to get on the ballot sheet. Stich up if you ask me to stop the left as JM would have given GB a very good run for his money and made for some uncomfortable times for GB when he beat JM bya small minority knowing that a massive chunk of the labour party and its affilates have a much different view than himself.

I went to hear John McDonnell speaking in Liverpool a couple of months ago. My son is studying politics at college and wanted to hear him. I was quite impressed. I was a member of the Labour Party, but left once I realised the way it was heading. Had I been aware of the appalling record Labour Governments have had on foreign policy, I wouldn't have bothered joining in the first place. I still get people telling me "you should stay in and fight from within" but far cleverer people than me (E.P Thompson for instance) couldn't stop the rightward march of Labour. My view is the Labour Party provides a nice little cul-de-sac for the establishment to channel any revolutionary spirit from the working class down. The setting up of a mildly socialist party which the ruling elite found acceptable has held back the advancement of the workers. People like George Lansbury and John McDonnell are rare birds within Labour. If that wasn't so, people like Sir Stafford Cripps, Gaitskill, Mandelson and Blair would feel uncomfortable holding membership.Big Daz wrote:IWW Fellow Worker
