£150 in M & S tokens eh? Well none of the screws in my domain have spent it on personal hygiene products.

"Spare tyres, cluelessness, uninspired stinking clothes unchanged for 6 days, clinging together for security, issuing lies, punishment and blind obedience to higher grades in place of truth.. that's not ordinary management, it's Royal Mail line management"

Hopefully for Spec-Savers if our managers are anything to go by.
Or something to remove the black from their legs, the scabbby, strike-breaking scum.
Sticks and stones and all that s**t but we weren't on strike, I believe I work for a public service and that's what they should get, regardless of pay disputes
OOps if thats what you believe you might find your ideas are directly opposed to that of your CEO. I'll make you a bet , send him an email, ask him a direct question try any nefarious underhand means possible and if you can get Adam to mention RM and public service in the same sentence without the word not,...you can have my 1.5% raise next year. It can't hurt go on give it a try I dare you
I know where your coming from, but you can't bet what you don't have and I thought there were "strings" on your 1.5% next year.

I joined as a Post Office casual, made it to a full time Postie and managed to get promoted into a support function at CMA grade, what annoys me is the them and us mentality on this site, I don't work in operations or have any CWU grades in my team.

To really challenge the senior managers in RM we need a united front between the CWU and lower / middle CMA staff, not this silly name calling which may make individuals feel big but take us no further forward.

Lets all remember we are RM employees and Union members, lets campaign for the CMA and CWU to work together to challenge the hierachy and deliver the service the public deserves.

For starters I would suggest that the CWU refuse to negotiate on pay until the CMA have concluded theirs, this would do two things, firstly ensure that the Managers don't get any more than posties (unlike this year) and second mean that any pay dispute would take place closer to Christmas when there is extra pressure on RM to avoid a strike.

It's easy to slag off the entire management but most of us started as Posties and thats where our loyalties lay.

well if you want to work in unison with the cwu instead of imposing the will of the company upon us and stand up for yourselves, you should have joined us on the picket line and shown them a joint determination to sort this mess out together.

I do agree there is a them and us atmosphere on here but this is only a reflection of what happen in most DOs. On the Operational side our Lineo who is an ex-postie kept telling us we were being stupid striking and that we would achieve nothing. During the actual strikes he was telling us we should go on strike more as he was minting it. They also say we will treat you fairly but when you say you can only work to time they put pressure on you to complete. All of this mounts up and posties naturally feel there is entrenchment of the Them and Us mentality.

If Higher management listened instead of demanding from on high and allowed local managers to manage and make their own decisions on a day to day basis I think that the CMA and CWU at least on a local basis would have a much better relationship.

Perhaps that's why AL and AC seem to be trying to manage by dictat instead of co-operation and local knowledge.

Caught me out there ,a safe bet either way.

Tend to agree with the thrust of your statement. A divided workforce is more easily defeated.Obviously there are good and bad managers and posties, and many of the divisions are deliberately promoted by senior management as a means of control. One worrying fact is that the majority of both managers and posties haven't the foresight to recognise the runaway privatisation train bearing down on them and all the consequences;massive job lossess; pay cuts ;fragmentation and asset stripping of RM.
We also have in common the fact that both our unions seem to lack the will and strategy to effectively oppose this smash and grab raid, neither has had any impact yet, apart from delaying the process, what chance of them creating a united front?

The CMA is nothing more than an organised force of strike breakers who are there to carry out the commands of those further up the chain without question. The 'them and us' mentality goes back much further than the history of this site, and certainly much further back than the internet. As for "good and bad maagers", I've only ever met one good one and he left Royal Mail in 1982.
Turkeyboy is quite correct. The CMA is affilliated to the TUC (goodness knows why) and their members crossed the picket lines set up by union members. That makes them strike breakers. That's not name calling. It is the recognised descriptive word for strike breakers. If you don't like being called a scab, don't be one. As for joint working with the CMA, you might just as well ask me to work with the Tories or the National Front. They're also a shower of s**t.
The Industrial Workers of the World. The union whose members never scab!

Glad to hear that you once encountered a good Manager, that's something anyway even if he has left, there's good and bad in all grades in RM and I truly believe that most posties are decent hard working people, but same as managers you get some crap ones and it's a shame to tar us all with the same brush.

As for CMA being affiliated to the TUC, what are the TUC doing to the CMA because their members crossed your lines, nothing as we weren't balloted for strike action so it would have been illegal.

As I have previously posted and I would respect your opinion on rather than the name calling, why don't the CWU accept lower/middle managers as members, it would give them a much better bargaining position as we would all be in the same union. Why do the CWU have their pay negotiation first then the CMA follow? you get 6.9% (with strings) we get 7.3% (with strings, but our bonus is now counted as pensionable pay, unlike yours). If the CWU sat back and demanded that they would only negotiate when the CMA had they may have a bigger stick to beat RM and any ballot would happen closer to Xmas with additional pressure on RM to avoid IA.

Just as an aside I got home today to find a 739 card stating, "Left in wheelie bin", you guessed it it was bin day today. :whistle

I doubt whether RM would like any of their managers to be in the CWU. They're better value for money if they will work during CWU strikes. I expect the managers are aware of that... they won't want to prejudice their future careers by acknowledging that the CWU point of view may be valid.... :whistle

If there is even one brave enough to say that he or she would like to join and support the CWU, to prove there's a demand for membership amongst managers, that would be encouraging. It'd be an interesting experiment in Union development if they were allowed to join. Though I think something would have to be done about the pay differential before the "us and them" feeling could be substantially reduced.

I have seen a Supervisor being ordered to leave the Main Union and join the Sweetheart Staff Association by a Area Manager otherwise he'd stay in the same job and would not be promoted in a vaguely/broadly similar industry. I think this was influenced by all this the enemy within about the NUM & GLHQ ? @ Cheltenham and "loyalty & commitment being compromised " from the Tories .

Amicus/CMA threatened to ballot their members re RM making their managers reapply for their own jobs . It's "amazing" that AL who "won't be broken by the unions " was so willing to compromise with orchestrated strikes looming .

Ironically the Unite Leadership are scathingly critical about McRM's we know best arrogance , the amount of B&H towards it's managers from Senior/Area & long hours culture + it's 70's command & control style.

Therein lies the problem. Most of the ex-posties that became managers at my place were the laziest posties imaginable. Favouritism is shown daily to their old and lazy mates. Hardly sets a good example does it.

This is easily solved by using the RAFs method of moving people who have been promoted away from their old colleagues. This helps both sides as it does not allow nepotism and favouritism, but it also helps the newly minted Manager as he starts of new at a place no-one knows him so they are less likely to be embarrassed giving friends directions and can immediately start managing in the style they want.

Quiet simply really.

I don't intend to engage in a debate with someone who has decided his interests lie with those intent on trampling over the rights of the working class which have been hard won over several generations, but I will reply to the condescending remarks you have made above. Postmen and postwomen who are not up to the job are inevitably found out and sacked. Poor 'managers' are simply moved around from office to office for years on end. Therefore, I have no respect for Royal Mail 'managers' who, it has to be said, are merely under-employed office boys who lack initiative and are incapable of leadership.

Which tells me that the TUC are puppets of governments and the ruling class as they are happy to endorse the scab cabal of the CMA who decided that one of the basic rules of trade unionism, that of not crossing a picket line, does not apply to them. The CMA should be expelled, and the fact that they haven't been shows the total lack of integrity of dupes like Brendan Barber.

I haven't engaged in "name calling" yet. You are a scab. That is a simple matter of fact which is beyond dispute. You broke a strike, therefore you are a scab. As for the CWU accepting the CMA, why do you imagine the rank and file of the CWU would want a bunch of class traitors joining us? Many of us would like to see strike breakers expelled from the CWU, so the idea of inviting another few thousand into the fold is laughable. The best way to give us a better bargaining position would be for other unions to respect picket lines and not scab.

Grass the postman up. You know you want to. Think of the Brownie points like all 'managers' do. It's the way most of them get on.

Cheers, haven't laughed so loud for ages, I acknowledge I have direspected my fore fathers by trying to provide a better future for my family by getting paid more than I did as a Postie.

Obviously that was tongue in cheek, I work to live, end of. Not as part of some glorious and noble battle to repress the working classes by being a higher grade in the same company as them, as I've said before I work in a support function and don't even have any CWU grades working with me.

I've no interest in grassing up my postie, although I am tempted to leave the Xmas tip in the same place!

Anyway, do you not think it would be an idea for the CWU to refuse to negoitiate on pay until us aggressive, bully boy, failed Postmen, unqualified, haven't got the brains we were born with, nepotism merchants have?
