Cost of stamps to go up in April
) - The cost of a first class stamp will rise by two pence to 36 pence from next April, Royal Mail said on Thursday.

Second class stamps will go up three pence to 27 pence from April 7, while large first class letters will cost 50 pence, up six pence.

Royal Mail's Luisa Fulci, director of commercial pricing and policy, said the company faces increased competition from commercial rivals and email and loses six pence on each letter it delivers.

"For many years profits from business mail have funded stamped mail losses," she said in a statement. "But it is getting harder all the time to maintain that subsidy."

Stamps will still be among the cheapest in Europe, she added.

Details of the changes are online at http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/jump ... d=66200782
