POSTAL services in the City of London rank in the top 20 in the UK despite this year's official and unofficial strikes, new figures show.

Royal Mail has released new half-year figures which show the "EC" postcode areas have the 15th best performance rating for deliveries in the UK. More than 87 per cent of 1st class stamped mail was delivered next day from April 2007 to September 2007.

By comparison, the "N" postcode areas in north London ranked in the bottom 20 - as the 15th worst area for meeting delivery targets in the UK. Just 83 per cent of 1st class stamped mail made it to its destination the next day between April 2007 and September 2007.

Howard Webber, chief executive of watchdog Postwatch, said: "Given the floods and industrial disputes, customers will not be surprised that Royal Mail's performance has been seriously below par during the summer.

"There will, however, be a collective sigh of relief that the bad news is over and that the future looks brighter.

"Next year, customers should expect Royal mail to be announcing a much-improved performance. That should help all of us to post with confidence.
