CEO Simon Thompson and CWU’s Terry Pullinger are jointly hosting a Workplace Live event to answer your questions, in the week we launch our Big Trust Survey, writes Paul Smith.
Simon and Terry – the CWU’s deputy general secretary (postal) – will be live on Workplace on Tuesday 20 April from 6.30pm.
The Big Trust Survey kicks off the day previously, giving colleagues the opportunity to have their voice heard and feedback on what it’s like to work for Royal Mail Group, with Simon and Terry urging everyone to take part.
On the Workplace Live event – the first of its kind since we rolled the platform out for all colleagues at the end of March – Simon and Terry will share their views as to why it’s important to take part.
Have your questions ready and be prepared to post them into the live feed, for your chance to have them answered.
Make sure you have registered for Workplace before the event so you don’t miss any of the action. Download Workplace from your smartphone App Store and login using the details shared in your final March payslip.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

It's actually not that complicated Martin. We are one of the biggest employers in the UK and there are different issues within many offices which will take time to resolve , there is not a light switch we can turn on to improve everywhere.
We have fixed hours and variable workload.
That's the root cause of the vast majority of ""culture" issues and let's not dress it up it's blatant intimidation.
The only way you can genuinely fix the problem for good and not just apply another sticking plaster is either have a fixed workload or more likely variable hours.
How many agreements have promised cultural change?
How many times have you thought both parties were genuine?

Within a MC, each shift has its own budget and within each shift, each work area has its own budgetDGH wrote: ↑15 Apr 2021, 15:35How stupid this is is pretty apparent when DOs regularly have to hand sort letters and flats that could have been sequenced/walksorted because the Mail Centre's budget is the Mail Centre Manager's main worry (rather than presenting the mail to his DOs in a proper and timely manner).
I wonder if RM might eventually have a few duties that work from home, who only deliver D2Ds, possibly combined with machines in a central location that collate the D2D togetherDGH wrote: ↑15 Apr 2021, 15:35Look at double slots for frames, for instance. With no D2Ds, they're not too much of an issue. As soon as you bring D2Ds into the equation, they're a pain. If you have lots of them and lots of D2Ds, they're a nightmare. Really it's an either/or situation. Either you ditch D2Ds and double slot to your heart's content with little issue (except where you've lots of named houses. of course), or you continue with D2Ds and just accept the limited organisational issues that arise from having single slots (big fittings, basically).

Riddle me this...
In a mailcentre when the hand reached finish o'clock you can put on your jacket and go home whether the work is completed or not.
In a DO it's a case of you're obviously not up to the job, we'll need to have a discussion about performance, you're taking the piss etc, etc.
Same business, practically the same job description aka sort and move on but totally different approach from management...

Some of the larger MCs might have the room to have full inward and outward setups in place at all times, the smaller MCs won't so the setups have to be cleared away.Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑15 Apr 2021, 20:44In a mailcentre when the hand reached finish o'clock you can put on your jacket and go home whether the work is completed or not.
You've also got dispatch times to think about, once it gets to dispatch time anything that's not ready doesn't go anywhere. There's not too much scope with changes of one dispatch time without changing all dispatch times because of the driving regs (required breaks from driving)

Re: LTB 154/21 - PATHWAY TO CHANGE - CULTURE AND THE JOINT BIG TRUST SURVEY
Its ok having all these surveys but in Royal Mail there have always been "winners and losers".
Why do only 36% of people valued in a company? Well, compare two posties. One is postie A who has worked for years and has picked themselves a nice cushy duty and gets regularly looked after by their gaffer with first dibs on the docket.
Then there is postie B who has worked a good few years who is part-time but has been working mainly full-time hours for months at the whims of the company with no real signs of permanently increasing their hours, is moved from one duty to another often to accommodate postie A. Sometimes they walk in to a duty with mail and packets in it that has not gone from the day before because they don't have a fixed duty. Do you think that they feel valued by their managers or the company?
The same could be said of Royal Mail line managers.

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Where do we participate in this survey? First I’ve heard of it.

Prefer not to say.
This survey is completely confidential (unless you say something which might identify you.)

Re: LTB 154/21 - PATHWAY TO CHANGE - CULTURE AND THE JOINT BIG TRUST SURVEY
Royal Mail had their chance years ago to fix issues such as 'culture' and didn't.
It's little surprise that people are so apathetic.
I'd confidently predict not 1 person in our office does the survey.

I'll do the trust survey when the Rev Paula Vennells goes to prison.
