Four postal workers have been sacked in Bristol as a result of events during the recent national strike. Two have been sacked at the South East delivery office (SEDO) after alleged clashes on the picket line.
In addition, one has been sacked at Clevedon, and one at Avonmouth, after comments they were alleged to have made on the Royal Mail Chat discussion website.
Workers at SEDO are balloting for strikes over the sackings at their office, Clevedon workers have voted to launch a ballot, and Avomnouth CWU members were to decide this week whether to join them.
A CWU member told Socialist Worker, “It is outrageous that Royal Mail are pressing ahead with these dismissals. The evidence against the two at SEDO is extremely weak, and the procedures were also not followed properly.
“And the remarks on the website are not directed against individuals, nor do they involve intimidatory or threatening statements. It is extraordinary that Bristol management seem to be out of line with everywhere else over this matter.
“Let’s hope the resistance from the CWU will secure the return of all four of these workers and the dropping of the charges. If not, there are almost certain to be strikes.
