LATE night parcel deliveries will be made by Royal Mail staff this week in a bid to ensure Christmas is not ruined at homes across Bolton.

A spokesman last night confirmed that staff will be working into the evening to clear a backlog of mail.

Workers were out on Sunday and delivered more than 3,000 items to homes across the borough.

But members of the public are still furious abou the backlog, claiming they have spent hours queuing outside the Royal Mail's Calvin Street sorting office in Bolton.

Paul Pover, of High View Street, is one of the hundreds affected by the parcel chaos.

He queued in the cold at the depot for two hours on Friday and two hours on Saturday to be told that the parcels could not be found.

He said: "The numbers of people affected by this is unreal and everyone has varying horror stories to tell.

"I am totally exasperated and cannot understand why management did not respond to this problem before it reached crisis point. Even staff at the depot admit this is totally out of hand."

He eventually got his parcels on Monday queuing for another two hours. "I just hope I don't get sent anything else," he said.

Anne Gallagher, of Sandham Walk, Great Lever, has been waiting for a parcel to arrive since November 28. She arranged for it to be sent to her local post office in Crescent Road, but it has not turned up.

Mrs Gallagher, aged 65, said: "This is the only Christmas gift that has not arrived. I was out when they tried to deliver it three weeks ago and I cannot understand why it is taking so long to be delivered to the post office when it is in the same town!"

The problems started in November and queues have got longer as Christmas approaches.

An increase in the number of Christmas presents being ordered on the internet is being one of the reasons being put forward by Royal Mail for the backlog.

A spokesman said: "We took out over 2,500 packets and 1,000 Special Delivery items on Sunday from Bolton North Delivery Office and the vast majority were delivered successfully.

"Less than five per cent of the items were returned to the office when no one was available to accept delivery.

"Customers who have received a 'Sorry, you were out' card through the door when we've attempted a delivery can contact customer services on 08457 740 740 to arrange redelivery."

The Calvin Street depot is also staying open until 8pm today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday) this week for customers who want to collect their parcels in person..
