Why what's the problem? He knows how easy your walk is?

That's such a dumb point of view it's hardly worth applause.
The "problem" with an OPG moving into management in their own office is two fold.
The first is that the members now have to worry about any personal issues they may have had with this manager resurfacing now that they are in a position of power.
The second concerns the fact that some members may know personal details about or have a relationship with this manager that may compromise their ability to manage effectively or fairly.

That's why the business prefers where possible to move people out of their original office.
You can have personal issues with anybody, management or otherwise. I'm good mates with one lino, to the point we meet socially and our wives are mates as we're fairly similar ages with similar interests. There's one lino I cannot stand simply because we clash as people. Both are still my managers, and I've had ding dongs with both in the past but at work I deal with both the same. We're at work, therefore meant to be professional about things.

You're kind of missing the point.
It's not having the issues that's the problem but the dynamic suddenly changing between two people that have already had issues. People hold grudges and something said between two colleagues may not be something that would be said between one person and their manager.
Although you can't completely eliminate that kind of unprofessional behaviour you can minimise the risk.

It's as much to protect the managers from unfounded claims of bias as it is to protect the members.

In any industry people get prompted and progress into management; the idea people can't deal with that is just silly in my opinion, because they may not like said person or have previous with them. But agree to disagree.

In the Forces it's general practice to move people to a new unit when they're promoted. It may sound silly but it's been proven over the years. It prevents just the sort of Favouritism and Victimisation that we've been discussing.

Why have they got to worry about personal issues? Surely it's a professional business and staff AND managers should behave professionally and personal issues don't come into it? Secondly if people want to go in work and discuss their private and personal info well then it's just asking for trouble. In our office and probably most other people can't keep their mouths shut and spread gossip. I go there to work, that's it. I wouldn't class anyone at the s**t hole I work at to be friends no matter how well I may get on with them, they all stab one another in the back. FACT. Seems to be the Royal Mail employee culture, toxic as f**k.

And within a couple of months in the new unit ... they'll be favouritism and victimisation claims anyway. It's not proven at all, there's no magic way to do it.... because it comes down to personality, some will do well where they are already well accustomed/some won't - same for sending them to a new place. It's the same in any industry, and the general rule of thumb in most is to move management about, so if anything's proven - it's that, otherwise it wouldn't be massively commonplace on low level managerial roles.

I tend to agree with you there Smokey. Like you I treat it like a job. There does seem to be a large element that see RM as some sort of Social Club though! They'll be wandering around the frames chattering away like an Old Fish Wife (normally complaining about how busy they are, and how much work they've got). Well go and start doing some I think FFS! :arrrghhh

When I first joined, and it started getting rowdy, an Old Postie used to shout the mantra, "LESS TALKING .... MORE SORTING"! :cuppa

I hear what your saying Clockwork. At least if they start at a new unit they start with a clean sheet. No baggage of anykind. :hmmmm

It's a bit like when you walk onto the sports pitch and you hear the Referee addressing the opposition players by name. You think, "I hope there's not going to be any favouritism here". :no no

I often think they move Managers about so that the BIG problems in DOs never get sorted out properly. Duty Holders & Reps just start to get the impression the DOM's getting up to speed on the problems...... which are the Oversized Duties, and who the Piss Takers are, ...... they can see a light at the end of the tunnel ........ "Yep we'll have to do something about that " ....... and then the DOMs moved on and another takes his place! :arrrghhh

There NEVER seems to be an efficient Hand Over/Take Over (apart from where the nearest Greigs is) and the whole process starts again. :cuppa
