Bristol Mail Centre management redundancies.

Post by teesdale »

Quite a big cull of managers at Bristol taking place, although more will be arriving to take some of their places. The end outcome still leaves us with too many in the mail centre where money is no object. Traffic manager is going as in all mc so is a real saving. Office bloke and onsite HR ??? post going = saving. Early shift manager goes but is replaced with someone new = no saving. Lates PSA manager going and a 2nd waster to be medically paid off = saving. Possibly two managers going back as postman = saving. Early manager goes = saving. Late shift manager went on weekends temporarily and was replaced by a new shift manager = no saving. There did seem to be at one time 4 people doing the job of Mail Centre Manager and a jolly time was had looking at posters with graphs, but eventually interest waned. These 4 must have cost Royal Mail £300,000 per year. This group is of the most interest. The MCM stays. The operations manager ??? post disappeers and he moves into distribution = no saving. The quality manager ??? leaves = saving. The improvements manager ??? post disappeers but a new position is CREATED of performance manager for this guy to move in to = no saving. Looks like this bloke would not take redundancy and refused to move to another mail centre or office so some funds have been found from somewhere to accomodate him. Some small savings here but its not that long ago since two new ones started on lates and the Communication Managers Association Health and Safety Rep has to still be paid although he never attends work. It looks more like old managers take redundancy and new ones recruited to get on the gravy train.

The managers stepping down to uniform grade will most probably be retaining their salaries till uniform grades catch up

Operations managers are dropping a pay grade and having to do more hours admittedly for the same money but will lead to future savings once ex-ops managers move on.

A lot of Traffic managers gone across the business I understand - 2 left countrywide. Some production control jobs have gone with a large amount of work centralised.

A lot of trainers have gone and I fear more will go in the near future.

Office admin staff have been reduced with roles either disappearing or being merged.

From what I've seen it seems old managers earnt more /worked less more than their replacements - roles in mail centres are being merged so should see the number of WAMs reduced e.g. FSM manager merged with Mech etc. Cutting away at the managerial template is still a work in progress I understand.

Some tasks look like being dropped to OPGs rather than managers.

The cuts are not over.

I would expect to see in every MC that:

All CSSs, IMPs, iLSMs, CFCs, PSMs and FSMs to come under 1 manager. With the volume of flats and letters having dropped off a lot, maybe flats and manual letters could also come under the mech managers as rejects from CSSs, IMPs, iLSMs, CFCs and FSM could all potentially go to manual sorting (CSS rejects will probably either go back to the IMP or iLSM for resorting back to a batch or get sent as CSS rejects to the DO

SDs and Tracked under 1 manager, both products are trackable throughout and some MCs might sort with Tracked within their SD lockers

Normal packets under 1 manager
