Duties may be made in the future that includes working a Sunday but nobody will be forced to sign for them.
What if an office decides to rotate Sunday working through the majority of its duties?

You only have the choice up until there's no choice left.
Reserves don't get to pick what duty they are covering.
The senior guys won't be forced to sign for a Sunday duty, after that it's a crap shoot.
Just to add to this, in our shared van revision years ago there were a couple of full time duties that didn't look too good on paper (rough parts of town, hilly etc) and were the last available to be picked. The next guy up asked if he could opt to be a reserve, rather than have to do one of them permanently, taking his chances with getting "good" duties now and then.

The Dom told him that he could, but the duties had to have permanent holders rather than 100% reserve coverage, and that if everybody following him also opted to be a reserve, that as the most senior full time member of staff left ( and also the guy next in line) he would have to choose one of the duties rather than the duties being forced upon the 2 least senior full timers in the office.

I don't know if that's official re-pick policy, or what.....it's just what was said in my office. It worked out for him in a way, because somebody less senior was willing to do the duty for the benefit of having a regular rotating day off.

It could also have a knock-on affect on MCs and RDCs (do the PSMs require the use of MDECs?) as Saturday nights would need covering, so possibly duties might have to change in MCs, RDCs and possibly MDECs

That is/was wrong, the junior bods get it end of.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

As I said, I don't know what the rules for a re-pick were/are in such circumstances. At the time (2011) our union rep was in full agreement with the Dom over this (ie, both of them were wrong) and it would have been interesting to see if the guy had bothered to investigate further up the union/management hierarchy to see if he was being given the correct advice at local level.

As it turned out his concerns were academic, but it just shows that unless the local bods in charge of revisions know what they're doing then there is potential for possible mistakes like this.

The senior reserve has first pick of any vacant duty until it's advertised/repick. That's all.

There is no rule forcing you to pick a duty however reserve resourcing is a local thing so if your manager allocates the reserves to the duties you can guess the rest...

We’ve been delivering on Sundays now for 3 weeks and so far we have 15 volunteers. Only 4 are needed each week so it’s on a rota. What’s the big deal? I can’t understand what people are crying about.

I think more than 4 will be needed though when things improve on sunday.

Perhaps they have family's commitments on a Sunday that cannot be changed....and the reason that they took the job was so that it fitted around their family life.

Yes I'm sure that across the offices there will be plenty of volunteers who are happy to work Sundays as they want the extra pay and it fits with their lifestyle.

However.....what about when there is an office where there are not enough volunteers to cover the shifts on a Sunday?

Suddenly it's not going to be volunteers covering the shift is it.......

I think a lot of people are totally miss understanding the concept of Sunday delivery.

It’s not going to be like a normal day like Monday-Saturday. Sunday delivery will be tracked only and a premium service. Only a select few on companies will take advantage of it. Currently it’s covid tests and soon to be ZARA. Amazon may soon come on board and a flower company. Ultimately it will be similar companies that currently use our LATs services. We won’t be delivering all the small personal customers items that are collected from post offices, home businesses etc
There’s talk that half the office might have to work Sundays, that’s simply not the case.
