Allan Leighton's term as royal mail chairman extended

The Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform today
announced that Allan Leighton's term as Chairman of Royal Mail, would be
extended.

Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform, John
Hutton, said:

"Allan Leighton's reappointment will help provide the continuity needed for
Royal Mail to make progress on its modernisation plans and to contribute to
the review of developments in the postal services market announced today,
and I am grateful to him for agreeing to extend his term of appointment."

Notes to editors

1. Allan Leighton is currently, Deputy Chair of George Weston Ltd, Loblaw
Companies Ltd and Selfridges & Co Ltd. He is also a Non-Executive Director
of BskyB.

2. His term will be extended to March 2009, and his remuneration will remain
unchanged at £20k basic salary with the potential to receive up to a further
£180k in performance related bonuses. Other terms and conditions will also
remain the same.

3. Allan Leighton was originally appointed in March 2002 after an open
competition. His current term was due to end in March 2008.

4. This an OCPA regulated post and this extension has been made in accordance
with the Office of the Commissioner for Public appointments. OCPA has
agreed to the extension of Allan Leighton's term. Mr Leighton has no recent
recorded political activity. He has held no other Ministerial appointments.

I think you may be right dvb. Do we have the feeling that the media, of which leighton is a director is turning against brown and his new labour tories. I have no doubt none of us are under the illusion that Cameron is anything other than an old fashioned tory, therefore privatisation and the oppression of workers rights will be top of his agenda.

he was keen to stay on , explains the attitude , god help us all !,like having a cat in charge of pigeons, he's thrown his toys out of the pram a few times & threatened to resign a few times over partial privatisation .

Even the arch ultra Blairites have said he's high maintenance but worth it , translated into English that's a pain in the a*** and a prima donna/brat .

These American style corporation people see government & even Joe Public as a problem as well as a opportunity , basically they see themselves as above the law or just about everything , they do what they like , put people out of business.

If New Liebour keep appeasing the likes of Leighton , they become more powerful and have to be appeased even more to the point of bringing down Governments & Democracy . Even the right wing guru Adam Smith thinks a country that's basically ran by those sort of people is a terrible government .

In the States you've Walmart towns , no other shops . New Liebour just has a straight choice either oppose them; and stay in opposition or bend to them but it means that it's lost it's way , a ship without a rudder .

Many of Walmart or Asda staff are actually subsidised by the government with the likes of tax credits , DHSS benefits etc . Maybe that's what New Liebour call partnership

I really dispair of the mentality of these people! We are trying to provide a Public Service. True, it is a Business now, and as such has to make a profit. But to keep someone on, who has drasticaly cut our resources, to create short term profits. Is frankly disgusting!

Why does it have to make a profit? There is only one shareholder and one share which is not tradeable on the market . In this case share price value based on performance and dividend expectations is meaningless.
Any increases in profits are delivered to the shareholder. If numbers employed and salaries were both raised this would also increase revenue for the shareholder, as well as reducing public expenditure ie family tax credits;SS payments

The only thing going to happen to RM is bankrupt and that is what those two twats whant just as we reach it they will get their way and be allowed to privatise the company.
