Plenty in our office have 'stepped down' from driving and not a thing has been done or said. Interesting times ahead if they only now enforce the policy that your job/location is at stake if you decide not to drive. Like anything in RM, it's a problem of their own making.
Use of agency and the non-driving staff member transferred to another office?
Could RM eventually have it so that ALL duties require driving?
My gut feeling is that eventually all staff will do Sundays at some point, probably on rotation
So what will non driver’s do on a Sunday in delivery offices then?
Non drivers will eventually be Mon-Fri when Saturday becomes a parcel only day.
Non drivers will eventually be rarer than hen's teeth.
Spot on and been thinking this would be the way RM went for a few years now.
Watching all the other couriers out delivering yesterday late into the afternoon and early evening and I think it won't be too long before RM follows suit. All this moaning and groaning about Sunday deliveries is rather funny really because what could potentially be around the corner could be far far worse for peoples work / life balance in this job. The companies playing the long long game here and know they'll eventually have a delivery workforce that is driver only. Those immortal words / warning "there's a job for those who want or are able" spring to mind.
I would have thought the Long Term aim of the Business would be to recruit New Starters with the proviso that they had to work Sundays.
That way RM could probably take the hit of paying extra, to encourage current staff to man the shortfall, until they had enough of these New Starters.
Are u suggesting the new starters should be paid standard rate on the Sunday? We already have a 2 tier workforce with the part timers at ours having not been made up for several years, this suggestion adds a 3rd tier. Besides that most new starters now seem to be given temporary contracts in readiness for when RM can water down the uso and get rid of a load of us.
Just my thoughts Mate. You know the way RM think as well as I do.
If they did recruit those New Starters for Sunday Duties it wouldn't surprise me if it was Standard Rate Pay. After all there's not a lot of jobs in the Business that pay over the odds is there? Unless there's a load of Juicy Highly Paid Jobs in these "Protected Areas" of the Business that we all hear about. The same ones where Posties don't have enough work to keep them on the streets for a 4 hour Delivery.
Whenever RM consider a problem I find it useful to think like an RM Accountant. "What Option will save me the most Money"! Regardless if it's making Common Sense or people are losing their jobs.

Like all Wage Slaves, he had two crosses to bear: The people he worked for and the people he worked with! (Stephen Vizinczey.)
Will the non-drivers have MUCH LONGER walks once the new D+4 (or whatever it's called) product kicks in? If most of the DSA moves over to it then it's going to mean that most non-parcel mail will probably all end up being done on the same day of the week
What about some of the non-drivers doing duties that are purely D2D?

Well as long as van share is in it will be everyone (excluding parcel drivers) that has bigger walks to do when economy mail kicks in and parcels on dedicated vans, couple that with Saturday only parcels more than likely and it’s a bit of a worry I think.

You seem obsessed with non drivers SP.
As of now the plan as far as I'm aware is to continue with van share in the core delivery operation.
Non drivers will continue to be paired with drivers.
The large parcels will move to the afternoon parcels operation.
All of the walks will be getting longer iincluding driver’s to compensate for a) declining mail volumes and b) the removal of these large parcels.
What happens further down the line if\when Saturday becomes a parcel only day is up for debate but you're getting way ahead of yourself.
What sort of times do you think they’ll need packet drivers for 9-5 or more like 12-7
It will be until 7pm so you can work back from then.
You have to complete the indoor element of the core delivery first then reset the office for a parcel operation so there's no point before 11am and after that it will depend on when these parcels are fed into your office.
after that it will depend on when these parcels are fed into your office.
It will either be on the final runs from MCs to DOs or the DOs will have to send vans to pick them up from the MCs. Once the 06:30 dispatches have gone, we don't have any more after that

That's not what happens now.
LAT feed comes in at around 11am.
The plan is to work around that.
So quite late then eh, I couldn’t do that 5 days a week, like I said on another post, surely less senior people could leap frog people who don’t want them sort of hours but all available duties and reserve spaces have been taken in a revision.

Nope the 06:30 is our *FINAL RUN*, there are *NO MORE RUNS* after the 06:30. It's either the mail comes in to make the final dispatch, the LAT offices send a van to collect it or it fails. It's as simple as that
4. Non drivers will not work Sundays because they're no use to the business, same might go for Saturdays in the future.
5. Non drivers will likely find their options in a repick are severely limited depending on the delivery methods going forward. Hct duties or potentially LWT with feeds but long mostly letters delivery.
I know most offices will have their own local solutions but we have several duties where a HCT is used and I hope that their duties get extended to reflect the substantial lack of parcels being left behind on them.
Other than that I believe that being a non-driver is like gold in Royal Mail because 60% of what we deliver is....wait for it...parcels

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
My unit has just put in for recruitment an their hours are until 1800 and include Sundays. They are rightly so on the same pay scale as any previous trialist and will be getting the increased Sunday rate.
