Using personal car to carry mail

Post by jsquared »

Am I allowed to use my personal car to carry mail? It keeps being suggested to me that I could stay out longer if I store some of the mail in my personal car. I didn't think it was legal to do that because of my car insurance. What is Royal Mail policy? I'm a temporary contract worker.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

You're not even insured to drive to your first delivery point, mail or no mail, unless you have business insurance. You would be on Royal mails time then and it's not covered under normal insurance. Having mail in the car would require you to step up from normal business insurance to some kind of courier insurance. I'm sure it wouldn't be cheap.

Yet many in my office do this on a daily basis. Management know it. Nothing is said.

There are people here bringing their cars into the yard to put 3 or 4 bags in the boot, and then just meeting a driver halfway round to get the rest. Management must see them coming in on the cameras, they know what’s going on but as long as it gets parcels delivered and rounds cleared they turn a blind eye, I’m just waiting until something goes wrong. A couple idiots here even go round at the end delivering large packets from their car. It’s astonishingly stupid.
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

Of course your not but just do it any way,do what you like and suits until they decide to sack you for it because it doesn’t suit them anymore.just look at the replies on this subject, all on a wing and a prayer till something goes wrong then lookout!,shouldn’t be even asking such a question, hello union please nip this in the bud once again,so we can have a true reflection of what workforce is needed and not what’s not needed becai they seem fit to cut corners and not do it correctly, and so it goes on,

The doom mongers keep saying “wait til something happens then the s**t’ll hit the fan”, but bearing in mind this practice has been going on in most delivery offices for at least a year has anything actually happened ie: mail being nicked etc etc?. Maybe criminals have moved on from nicking a bag of D2D and Chinese tat from a car. Oh and before anyone says it - no I don’t use my car, no need I’ve got a van every day.

How many of them have got courier insurance? Those that haven't are effectively driving illegally as their insurance won't cover them

Absolutely. Shouldn’t even be using your car if you are asked to work at a different office. I feel for the people who have been bullied into doing it to avoid starting late but I have noticed afew of the runners/make half an hour merchants are also at it so they can have a flyer, those I don’t feel sorry for.

I think you're right GRS. Very few of these Management Practices seem to go wrong. You could compare it to Dealing in Drugs  The Rewards are Very High & Profitable .... and the Risk of getting caught is Very Low (and I'm sure the Postie will be found at fault and left to carry the can) :cuppa
