You can only get SSP for 28 weeks that run along side your sick pay basically part of your sick pay if your pay ends and you run out of SSP too you will be on nil pay.

Then claim ESA (Employment support allowance) or universal credit if in a UC qualified area.

Just to make a point.
Your sick record never clears.
The stage you're on may clear but if you ever find yourself in the unfortunate position of landing at the consideration for dismissal stage or if IHR is under consideration all of your sick absence from day 1 of your employment becomes part of that discussion.

Something people who are tempted to play the system should always keep in mind.

I've seen people play the game for years, never even have a stage 2 and then have a genuinely unlucky year for illness, find themselves at stage 3 and lose their jobs because when you lay out 20 years worth of piss taking and stage dodging on a table it looks like you're a stage dodging piss taker.

yeah, it has to be said, it IS a very flawed and unfair system. people have/are/and will continue to ''play'' the stage game and get away with it for years and never get caught out. yet some people are unfortunate enough to have a flurry off bad luck and be genuinely ill over a very short period of time and bite the bullet simply because of the nature of the attendance procedure. i know plenty of people who ''play it'' simply because managers are prepared to issue no matter what the circumstances are. and some genuine cases that have unfortunately fell victim to its very nature.

Do Royal mail have to write to you and inform you that your sick pay is about to/will drop to half pay? Any notice period in advance of it happening?

They write to you 4 weeks prior to going on to half pay

Hi,

If once you go down to half pay, do you receive half pay plus SSP do you happen to know? The letter I’ve received says ‘you may be entitled to SSP to top up your wages’

Can i suggest in future. To play the system correctly, you only take a maximum of 6.5 weeks sick every year. That way you will always be on full pay for your sick Absences. With your 6 weeks leave. That equates to over 3 months off work each year on full pay. Shhhhhhhh i didn't tell you that . hehehehe.

If you are looking for IHR that is the way to get their attention. They would be happy to get you off the books .

Does there come a point when an employer can offer you IHR if you are off for 6 months, present for 1 year, off for 6 months, present for a year....?

why would they offer IHR, the person would probably be on no pay by that point, what would be the incentive to pay them out if they are costing them nothing?

This IS royal mail we're talking about.
