The ceasing of van shares has shown one thing - there is absolutely no need for 2 x full time staff to be paired together both on a sorting frame and in a van.
During Covid we've been forced into a One Man, One Van system. We never really wanted a Van Share system in the first place, that was introduced by RM because they thought they'd save some money. If you've got enough vans they can have a van each .... that's what we've done on several of our van shares.
It's also incredibly wasteful to have 2 people sitting a van together for up to an hour a day.
Are you referring to travelling to/from Delivery startpoint?
The problem is, with the likely increase of duty spans, there isn't enough time as most part time staff are on a 5.5hr day. The solution will be remote starting for PT staff on delivery only.
This has been the process during Covid for some Van Share Duties.
Full time driver preps both frames and takes a van full out to person starting in street (part time). This allows PT staff to do their 5 hours (after break) and the full time their 7 hours (after break).
It's an option I suppose. Not EVERY DO will be using the same systems they've got to cut their cloth accordingly.

I think the main reason it wouldn't work is that it would require a greater level of planning and structure than most line managers are capable of.
You would more or less have to stick to the rota and workplan and wouldn't have as much flexibility to move bodies around at the last minute.
That would be difficult for the firefighting style of management we have in a lot of offices.
Offices which have a large proportion of non-drivers will have to come up with some kind of longer-term plan beyond the current improvisation though, but I suspect they're just hoping that van sharing will be allowed again come September and so the revisions can be planned with 2/van as an immediately workable possibility.
I agree DGH that they're hoping van sharing will return ASAP. However we were told that the Managers had a Briefing saying that the "Covid" way of working is now the "Normal" way of working ...... so they can't have their cake and eat it!
I also believe that RM will probably be looking to Recruit those people who already have a licence. Nowadays a Driving Licence is probably a better qualification to have than some dodgy Media Studies or Landscape Gardening Degree.

It will because their start and end times will effectively be their PDA log in and log out times. You just need a 'clocking off' function on the PDA. Those beginning work in the office, sorting and/or prepping can clock in and out.
This wouldn't necessarily happen but there's no reason why it couldn't.
So the full timer takes responsibility for the remote starters specials in the office? That will go down well.

This anomaly has been around for 10 years where one person signs for all the specials on both walks.

I agree "The Driver" has always had to deliver larger packets, (and longer drives if you've any sense) and that's normally been Planned into the Duty. "The Walker" normally gets a few extra loops to keep him busy.
I for one would expect to have those extra "Chores" planned into my day. If not perhaps you should raise it with the New TableTop Revisions this year?

There have been loads of issues at our depot with part-timers working from home especially when full-timers are doing all the prepping, bundling everything up and then taking everything back to the office whilst the part-timer finishes at home.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
