Why do any full timers do any overtime?

Because it's usually indoor, without any management supervision and therefore easy money.

Also they usually live with their mum*.

*From my experience grown men living with their mum seems to be far more prevelant in Royal Mail than any other industry.

Regarding PT not being made up to FT, if I was in that position and needed more money I’d look for a FT job instead of constantly moaning that I’m not being made up to FT, why did you take the job in the first place?

To be fair it's a long time since part-timers were under the impression that they were likely to be made up to full-time any time soon.

Most of them stick around for the same reason full-time staff do because in most offices you can fill your boots with overtime and earn good "full-time" money that you couldn't earn anywhere else.

I don't want to cause any more aggro but just like full-timers, part-timers have to understand that although the situation is not ideal the earning opportunites in Royal Mail for most part-time staff is far better than most industries.

It's probably going to be a predominantly part-time job eventually.

do people do overtime simply because they 'need' the money though? there's a guy in ours who works earlies every morning and does packets on overtime and works his day off every week. he also works for a certain football club owner and on match days works as a steward for crowd control(when the crowds are allowed back in), and, he delivers for the local chinese takeaway on weekends. he owns his home and his missus works and he claims he doesn't need the money? (must just love work then). i think if we were paid a Grand a week you would still get people working overtime. greed comes to mind.

Deliveries in ours are, for the most part, too long.
Getting F/T to do their full hours might save a little o/t sorting on a morning,(perhaps starting a little earlier but still finish their cushy delivery on time) but there remains the problem of people (usually P/T) cutting off/booking protraction.
Perhaps our office isn't typical, how would I know?, but I don't see hours and hours of free time, enough anyway that would make a substantial difference to the office budget.
We have hundreds of new builds that haven't been accounted for in duty spans, and maybe a couple of thousand more in the coming 5 years or so.
So someone, somewhere, is going to have to get their thinking cap on.

If people are making time then this is purely down to the DOM, we have a lot of incompetent Dom's in Royal Mail, most couldn't manage a piss up never mind run a delivery office and senior managers know this and that's why PDA OA are here and the completion will be scanning in and out. The new software is designed to flag up massive overspend by Dom's to sector managers and delivery directors in order to bring spending under control and it will happen, kiss goodbye to a lot of indoor overtime peeps.

And NO, Dave Ward is not the worst leader.

Keep reading about this scanning in/out as if it is going to become mandatory.
About 1/4 of our staff have always routinely gone straight home without returning to DO (pre covid).
Post covid, that is now at 50%, so who's going to be the person to fraudulently scan someone else 'out'?

The problem is what do you want?
To finish before your time like the full-time staff or the full-time staff who are finishing early to work their hours? The first is not a position the union will help you with and the second won't improve your situation other than self satisfaction.

It is not really a question of self satisfaction, more of a desire to not to be made to feel like a second class citizen every day by our colleagues, our managers and our union representatives.
Take today:
The full timer who preps the duty I was on left the office at 8.30 leaving about 20 minutes of indoor work for me to do that he should have done.
He was finished at 11.55 a whole 1 hr and 40 early (that is assuming he had had no meal relief - I don't know)
I finished 5 minutes early (and utilised that time to wipe down the frame for whoever is on the duty tomorrow)

Why can he do that? Because in everyone's eyes I am a second class citizen.
And it really isn't very nice to be treated like that every day.
