I think the single biggest issue going forward is going to be reversing some of the current working arrangements, if that's what they decide to do. For instance, we have many staff that start and finish out in the street and in doing so are unable to fulfil their contracted hours, due to being 'tied' to a partner who brings the van plus both duties out to them.

I'm not knocking you and personally I think it's a stupid rule but technically you're not allowed to do that.
Management turn a blind eye if it saves them money and stops people from cutting off, we have guys meeting vans in delivery and loading their cars with parcels and pouches and then going off and doing walk by themselves it’s been going on for months and managers know it they are happy that the walks are getting done and it’s all they care about

I am currently using my electric bike to arrive at my first delivery point.I meet with my driver on the way round leaving my bike at a secure location near my start point.Without it would be a half hour walk or two busses.Twice a week...Monday ,Tues the duty is lapsed and i am treated as a reserve....so it becomes a lottery.
Happy days

You would need to ask Royal Mail.

I did quick search but where and when did they mention that you 're banned from cycling to a duty ? I don't recall seeing that anywhere and I've worked with my floater who did occasionally cycle to walk

Can postmen use cycles to convey to their first point of delivery or on delivery?
No cycles should be used to covey, transport, travel anywhere on delivery or to delivery points unless it is part of an approved RMG duty Structure

I would assume its something to do with health and safety/accidents on the road during work hours/liability
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

It's most likely to do with the fact that they would need to have some kind of control measure in place to check the condition of your bike and any PPE you were wearing.

We were told not to carry any mail in cars at all, only allowed to drive to first point of each bag to collect bag from back of van.

I like too see one man deliver 1,500 houses or more a day.

RM have done nothing about the situation despite it now being 10 months since the first lockdown.

In the long run van shares will be phased out but obviously that will need more vans. At the moment RM seem happy enough with people walking/bussing out and duties failing all the time. RM do not care about how people get out to the duty, and they do not care about the massive failing - the longer they can get away with not actually solving the problems, the happier they will be. The silence from the union about it is another matter!
