Postal workers at the Burslem delivery office in Stoke-on-Trent have responded to a long running campaign of management bullying by voting for strikes over the Christmas period.

A dozen workers, including many union reps, have been sacked or suspended by bosses who are attempting to smash the union.

There's a simple rule of thumb , Bullying is 1. In proportion to the level of bad management 2 To cover for it 3 In proportion to these "manager's " inadequacy

Union officials and Royal Mail managers at a Stoke-on-Trent sorting office will be meeting in an effort to avert a strike over the Christmas period.

Members of the Communication Workers Union at Burslem are threatening to walk out next week over the decision to suspend some of their colleagues.

The company said earlier this year 12 staff were suspended on full pay over allegations of bullying and harassment.

The two sides were expected to meet to discuss the details on Friday.

Three of the suspended workers have been protesting their innocence, saying they had not been told what the exact allegations were.

Royal Mail said all the cases were being handled according to strict guidelines, and all staff had the right to appeal against the decisions.

Staff at the sorting office have held a series of strikes stretching back over the last 12 months.

It tells me that if they can find 200 spare managers we have too many managers doing nothing the rest of the year, but we all knew that already

this is what royal mail's thatcherite senior managers wanted with the national strikes earlier this year i.e. "We've had Longridge and the miners , now this , this will be a tipping point for the good of RM in the next few years "

Propaganda Plant on Hellfail - "There is a desire to break your union like never before , hope you can afford your SWP subscriptions out of your giros , you 70's dinosaurs "

Even if people won tribunals which they most probably would , like with the GMB & Asda being fined , RM don't have to take anyone back , payouts would worth it to get rid of people.

Seen this happen in Manchester , badly handled on both sides , dismissal letters sent to reps in taxis in another industry , Union won the ET's hands down , company still appealed as they could afford litigation but not necessarily the Union .

Any reps who tried to make a issue of things were threatened with the same treatment .

RM had to tone a few things down under Brown's orders but they were only on the backburner . Nasty , very nasty .

More than one hundred delivery workers walked out on strike this morning over a long standing dispute which has left
twelve postal workers suspended since September. Picket lines will be held until 2nd January.



The twelve workers, three of whom are CWU reps and another three former reps, were suspended on 11th September
following spurious complaints including ‘encouraging others not to cooperate with Royal Mail management’ and ‘misuse
of position as CWU rep’. This was at a time when there was a national dispute taking place in Royal Mail which was
eventually settled in October.



The suspension of the twelve delivery workers came immediately after a petition, with over seventy signatures on,
regarding bullying and harassment by Royal Mail managers at the delivery office was handed in.



Royal Mail have refused CWU’s suggestion of taking this case to an independent national appeals panel. Management
have instead offered to have the case decided by Royal Mail managers in an adjacent area. This offer was
unanimously rejected by members at the delivery office at a meeting yesterday (Monday).



As well as industrial action over the Christmas and New Year period, the CWU is taking civil action against the managers involved.



Midlands Regional Secretary Lee Barron, said: “These are hard working employees with combined service of over 200 years and have done nothing to warrant this level of action. This is a disproportionate response by managers who have been accused of bullying and harassment and who are now refusing to allow an independent appeals panel to look at the case of these workers.



“The whole delivery office is supporting the twelve suspended workers. We will be on a picket line on Christmas Eve when we’d rather be with our families to support these workers who are being victimised by an aggressive employer.â€
