To Sarah Goddard, her pet cat Georgi is a cute tortoiseshell tabby who enjoys nothing more than a cuddle.

But for postal workers in Derby, the 18-month-old moggy has become such a menace that her owners were warned their post would be suspended if she was not kept under control.

Georgi has been accused of attacking postmen as they put mail through the letterbox.

One postman was even left bleeding several times after trying to deliver to her home.

Now Mrs Goddard and her husband Ben, 27, have been forced to install a new post box to protect their postman.

Mrs Goddard, of Great Northern Road, said she first noticed there was a problem when she and her husband failed to receive some post about two months ago.

She said: "We got married in September and people kept asking if we received their congratulations cards, to which I kept having to say no.

"It was very odd and pretty annoying."

The couple said they would receive the occasional piece of mail and then, two weeks ago, Mrs Goddard spotted her postman cutting across their drive to deliver to a neighbour.

The 24-year-old, who is a nursery nurse at Derby City Hospital, said: "I asked him if he had anything for us and I thought he was joking when he told us he was no longer delivering to us and we would have to collect our post from London Road.

"He said our dog kept attacking him when he attempted to deliver the mail and on numerous occasions had drawn blood.

"I sympathise completely with postman getting attacked by dogs but the only animal that lives at our house is our 18-month-old cat, Georgi."

Mrs Goddard showed the postman her cat but she said that he insisted that Royal Mail would be in contact.

The following day, the Goddards received their back- dated post and a letter from Royal Mail.

"It said that unless we kept the cat under control, any deliveries to the address would be suspended," said Mrs Goddard, whose husband is a land surveyor for Green Hatch in Little Eaton.

"I couldn't believe it. This was clearly a letter aimed at dog owners that had been amended for our circumstances."

The couple have now attached a separate post box to the outside of their home, although last week they returned home to find mail had been delivered through the original letterbox and not in the new postbox.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "As a caring and responsible employer, Royal Mail takes very seriously the safety of its employees. In this case, the postman involved suffered injuries to his fingers, drawing blood, on three occasions in one week.

"Unfortunately, animal attacks are a hazard faced by our employees but most pet owners are very responsible and Ms Goddard has taken action to allow the postman to make deliveries without the risk of further injury."

Yes and we all know that "owner's" say my dog does not bite!. For all we know it could be a saber tooth tiger the british press say oh it's only a kitten but mark my word's this is just the start of it next royalmail will have us cold calling selling whisker's cat food!.

I had 4 of those boxes yesterday and they are heavy, luckily everyone was in

Even the CAT! and just because tiddles look's like garfield the cat does not mean he wont bite or scratch.

Me too, the little bugger drew blood! I thought I'd scratched myself on something, it was only as I was walking away & saw the cat climbimg the curtains that I realised. Another postie in our office got scratched at the same house.

I covered a city round a few years ago and there was a dangerous cat notice in the frame,I thought it was a wind-up until I delivered to the house and this screeching ball of fur launched itself against the letterbox,quite nerve wracking it was too !

A few years ago covering a delivery on overtime & unfamiliar with individual homes I encountered a demented moggy that was damned dangerous.
As quoted above - less the warning notice - I was attacked by a 'Hell cat' and defended myself with the pouch. That 'kin moggy was one bloody violent animal. I reported it on the Duty hazard card once back from delivery. Quite an experience really!

they're very efficent little killing machines , watch you don't get bitten as you're skin comes up in little itchy sore lumps . I'm all right I get "presents " of voles, mice & rats off a feral cat . A decent feral cat can feather ,strip a feral pigeon ( flying rat ) quicker than we can . It's only doing what 350 million years of nature evolution has trained it to do.

There was one case in East Lancs when a postie took a short cut on a farm & was killed by a cow charging . Apparently it was that season when they go protective & hormonal .
