Postal surcharge blight

Sir - It is as if I'm living in Victorian times, before the penny post. Then the arrival of the postman was dreaded, as you had to pay to get your letters. We've now returned to those days, with the Royal Mail's surcharge for large letters, etc. So far this month, I would have had to pay nearly £26 for oversized cards. They were mostly six pence underpaid which with a surcharge totalled £1.06p each.

The surcharge will backfire on the Royal Mail if, as I'm doing, the letters/cards aren't collected from the sorting office, where you cannot see what the item is before paying for it. I am refusing all surcharged packages and it's up to the Royal Mail to bear the cost of returning them or having them destroyed.

Hopefully, the losses will see the removal of the offensive "The People's Post Office" adverts; what sick jokes it plays on us as it closes local post offices.

RM was the subject of jeremy vines show yesterday on surcharges.seem people are quick enough to whine but not to acvtually pay correct postage

I always let people have a look at the envelope to see if they recognise the handwriting etc, its embarrassing asking someone for £1.01 or £1.02 very petty but we have to do our job and get the money. Most times you get alot of businesses sending stuff out with no postage for example Argos send out a mailing a few months ago to 100's of people in our town asking to apply for one of there Credit Cards, they put no postage on any of the letters, some people paid for them and then let us know what it was so when the next one came in we could tell them what is was and it was up to them to accept it or not. The usual offenders for not putting postage on stuff is Banks, Doctors, Dentists, Solicitors, Gyms & Pizza Shops.
