Using Private Car to Get to Start of Walk

Post by swpostie132 »

Hiya, Just wondering if anyone could confirm the following is correct:

I live a short distance from my DO and so normally walk there, therefore have social, domestic and pleasure insurance only for my car.

If I was to use my own car to get to my delivery round, due to not being able to van share and not enough vans- would I be covered by the ABI's Covid Support Point 5?

"Support our key workers. If your work is critical to the national response to Covid-19 and you need to use your own car to drive to different locations for work purposes because of the impact of Covid-19, your cover will not be affected. You do not need to contact your insurer to update your documents or extend your cover."

Sounds like it does. If you're in any doubt ask your DOM to give you 3rd party cover, it's a sheet you fill in, and you can claim mileage from the office to your first delivery point, any additional delivery points along the route, and back to the office at 45p per mile. Works out at about £20-£30 a week for me, easily covers fuel and anything extra you might need. Just remember it does not cover actually carrying mail, you're basically just following the van.

Don't use your car not agreed with the union,
Royalmail cancelled using cars years ago.
Only temporary the now disgusting behaviour by royalmail again.
Do stuff when every it suits them p.s kick the car into touch let the Dom shuffle the dutys about to suit you.

A few in my office are happy to use their cars to follow the van around because once the last letter has been delivered, they can drive straight home rather than return to the office, particularly useful for those who need to get home ASAP because of childcare issues etc

Roll out of clocking in and out soon will solve this crap.
Your partner can't swipe you back in soon ,
Not fair what postie's are doing using cars then trying to shaft the van driver asswell , then they want to shoot home and the van driver still has to work pouching off selfish so they can shoot home.
Your duty span is to Finnish back at the office aswell
So manager turning a blind eye to that as well because your using car.
Get the rep onto it will stop straight away

If I were your driver a would make sure you came back to the office and help pouching off.

The agreement says clocking in and clocking out but you can still do a deal with your manager, so why do you think all staff are going to return to the office

So they stitch up the guy they are meant to be working with? He gets to take responsibility for both lots of docket lefts including specials, and both collections and then take the van back! Nice!!!!

That's nice for the poor bugger who has to not only do the big pkts but also return to office unload etc while their 'partner' has buggered off home. Nice!

Don't ask royal mail for advice on this. Ask YOUR insurance provider. End of the day it's them who will pay out or not if your car gets broken into because someone observing your day to day habits thinks you have mail in your car.

There was a rollaway few weeks ago postman was using his car , fact finding + they dismissed him I've been told,
We will never find out cause royalmail will hide the details so people will still use there cars

Maybe someone from his office on here could comment on here + wouldn't suprise me if his insurance never paid out

If it didn't happen, how would you choose which one has to deliver in the afternoons, with the associated need of waiting for a van to come in?

Happening all across the country. Drivers are being totally stitched up. People bussing/using own cars are banking 1hr plus per day, and getting paid an allowance (£25-30 per week) to do so. All the work on the driver to return to office with non delivered items/PDAs/collections/bags.
