They certainly are taxable. I’ve just had my tax code amended for tips received as I’m now retired..
Why on earth would you declare xmas tips to the taxman?
Mad as hatters google it some people.

Tips collected in our office are shared equally amongst everyone, reserves etc,am not against it ,but seem to go above and beyond on my rural and lucky that I have lovely customers, can’t say the same for everyone and people who cover me certainly don’t but keen to have a share of the tips as they don’t collect much, but never seem to be overly thankful to us which miffs me a bit!i would much rather share mine with the cover guys and reserves that do my round accordingly,

They are not taxable because as i will put it simply for you, take a barber he cuts your hair you tip for that job you tip a waiter for bringing your food and so on mrs jones from no 19 gives you a card with £10 in and says that's for Christmas, its a gift (not taxable) why do you think royal mail every year says tips are between the postman and the customer as long as nothing is done extra(then we get into bribes) cant believe you mugs have been paying tax on tips

Been on the same rural for the last 10 years.

I’ve had over £1500 and 15 bottles of wine/sprits
Youve got to be kidding. So you got an average of £5 off about 80% of your calls. FFS where do you deliver?

All tips are taxable.
It's just not many people are daft enough to declare them.

That's actually very dodgy.
Normally you are responsible for paying tax on your tips but if you pool them it becomes the responsibility of whoever manages the pool.
Sometimes the tips are pooled together and shared out - this is called a ‘tronc’. The person who looks after it is called the ‘troncmaster’ and they are responsible for making sure Income Tax is paid.

Whats the difference between your gran giving you a tenner gift in a card for your christmas and Mrs Smith who you know well giving you a tenner gift in a card?

Its a xmas present from someone who likes you - not a tip.
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

It's gained through employment therefore it's considered earnings.
Otherwise it would be easy for employers to use a third party to "gift" earnings and avoid tax and NI commitments.

As the government link up thread says, legally we are supposed to pay income tax, but not NIC's, on Christmas tips.

But it relies on the individual being honest and including them on their self assessment tax return. Or else HMRC estimating how much we get in tips and changing our tax code accordingly, but that needs RM or ourselves to tell them!

I suspect HMRC know the tax rules in our case are un-enforceable, and they're probably not interested anyway.
