Police are hunting a group of men who attacked a postman in a bid to steal his van.

It happened outside the Post Office in Ilkeston Road, Lenton.

The postman fought them off, but the gang took some items from his post vehicle and made off in a red van waiting nearby.

During the struggle, the victim suffered injuries that required hospital treatment.

He was discharged later that night.

The van used by the offenders in the incident, which began around 5.10pm on Friday December 7, was found nearby.

It was an old Post Office vehicle with the registration number V962 MDA.

Police want to find out where this van has been since the beginning of November and who has been using it.

Anyone with any information about the offenders or the van, who witnessed the attack, or in the area at the time is asked to contact DC Shane Barnes at the Central robbery team on 0115 9670 999 ext 5036 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

An MP has called for better protection for postmen following an attack in which a man was badly hurt.
The postman was taken to hospital with facial injuries after his van was stolen in Herne Bay, Kent on Friday.

"It cannot be right that high-value goods are carried in unprotected vans by men and women working alone," said North Thanet MP Roger Gale.

A Royal Mail spokesman said the safety of its people was paramount and security was monitored regularly.

The postman was badly beaten in the attack by two men in Cavendish Street and left lying injured on the pavement.

The people who did this to him will have had a profound effect upon him and his family and colleagues

The van, which was stolen and its contents rifled, was later found abandoned in Underdown Road.

"The Royal Mail must ensure that vans are protected and alarmed and that staff work in teams and not alone," said Mr Gale, who visited the victim on Saturday after he was allowed home.

"He was resilient but in a shocking condition," he said.

"The people who did this to him will have had a profound effect upon him and his family and colleagues.

"Thank God he is alive and will recover. The outcome could have been tragically different."

Mr Gale appealed to the public and friends and family of the robbers to identify them to police.

"There are people in Kent who can and must help to identify them," he said.

"If they are not caught soon they could strike again."

Of course they didn't take any notice of the reccomendations, it would cost money to implement. So long as they are making a profit, they won't do anything.

I just hope that the Postie is going to be ok.

Its the first part of this statement that gets me.

I have for the past 5 years complained that we deliver foreign currency on our normal driving duty. Its not rocket science for a robber to see a Royal Mail van pull up outside a bank each day in the summer and deliver about 5-10 silver special deliveries. Each contaning anywhere between £1000-£5000.

Its a joke that we have to take these sorts of amounts out with us on our own. I asked an area manager once if he would walk around with £15000 in his pocket and he said not to be silly. So I asked him why should I then? He just walked away muttering something about rules.

What really annoys me is that sometimes we were made to wait while securicor pulled up and made their collection. I would have to stand in the queue like the public. When I asked for someone to sign for them, they wouldn t, stating that they were then at risk to robbery.

Gee thanks, I thought, while I stood in line. Anyway, in the end, I would 739 them and leave. They then started taking the money straight away.
