Of course we are, but why he can't do what the rest of us do and follow a sport, read books, go to the pub, go fishing etc. eludes me.

'Disillusioned' postman took cash

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

postman stole £1,200 from mail after he became disillusioned with his job, a court has heard.

James Garrard, 52, of Beccles, Suffolk, admitted stealing cash from three packages a week over a year on his round, at Norwich Magistrates Court.

Garrard, a postman for 29 years, who had a round in Tharston, Norfolk, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft.

The court ordered Garrard to pay £400 costs and he was given a six-month jail term suspended for two years.

A six-month curfew between 1900 GMT and 0600 GMT was also imposed on Garrard.

The court heard how an inquiry was launched after a member of the public reported seeing Garrard opening packages in his Royal Mail van.

His actions followed his disillusionment with his job, prosecutor Simon Nicholls said.

"The job had been getting him down," he said.

"He said, due to changes, he was not able to have a laugh and a joke any more and his delivery round was getting bigger."

Ted Bell, mitigating, asked the court not to jail Garrard who had been suffering from severe burns he received in an accident and needed regularly medical attention.

"He is in a very bad way as a result of the severe burns that have left him in an extremely vulnerable condition," he said.

He stole the cash because his ingrowing toenail was playing him up - might just as well have said that!

Now i aint got no time for this geezer robbing £1200 and being caught... The fact he had 1st degree burns MIGHT of made a difference in his mental state.. Not for us to say..... But he still knew what he was doing was wrong.... HE made all of us look bad... Its the same over... Now.....
This is the flip side and be fair... If he was avin it away with £120.000.00 then i would of said... "UNLUCKY SON AND WHAT TYPE OF PORRIDGE DO YOU LIKE??" And he would of deserved it... Having his sentence suspended for two years is about right i say... In light of the medical evidence IF it shows Him to be Mentally Affected... If not... Should of banged him up for at least 2yrs...

:lfo :cfo I blame these two!!! :speak to the hand :speak to the hand

probably a very bitter person with a chip on his shoulder and thought RM or the world owed him something with big problems & issues as a result of , the burns may have pushed over the edge , is that fair comment ?

IF he suffered burns whilst on delivery , he'd have had no sympathy off don't give ATOSS & probably been smeared as a malingerer & B&H-d back to work .

He sounds very self centered but he'd hardly be only one in RM like that . Maybe the judge was too lenient , could have had a good solictor that spun a good line , could be playing on it ,though it's not something you'd wish on anyone , may have got psychiatric reports to save him from jail ; who knows ?

There's been cases of RM ignoring a £12,000 package theft as it took place on a loading bay not outside & keeping his job , cases of staff stealing diesel and then working for a parcel firm .

Did he have the burns BEFORE stealing?

Post by andy2007 »

I find it hard to believe that he was able to perform his normal duties with severe burns. So I assume that it happened after the incidents. If I'm right, then he shouldn't have had his sentence suspended. He could have been treated whilst in Jail. If I'm wrong, then I can understand, BUT NEVER CONDONE, what he did, as he shouldn't have been expected to work while suffering that type of injury.

I realise that we all make mistakes, and he will have to live with the shame of what he did. But please remember: he was in a position of trust, just like the rest of us. If the Public can't rely on our honesty, then they won't use us. Just because we deliver "the final mile" for our Competitors, doesn't mean that we won't be badly hit if people go elsewhere.

No-one is perfect: but if you commit a crime while in a position of trust, you should face a stiffer sentence. Because you are not just commiting a crime, you are also betraying those who have trusted you, and relied on you!
