If people know what theyre doing its not bad, but many people will write the house number on the 739 during prep, then throw the card away if the customer is in, such a waste you dont need to write the anything on the card.scoobydo79 wrote: ↑11 Dec 2020, 16:10
And that is the correct way. Bad practice to mark parcels with a P739.

Re: Square peg in a round hole
I don’t. Because of the amount of parcels & packets, the 739 card i slot In hanging out a bit in front of the mail, is to indicate to me that there is a parcel or packets with that mail, so when I’m bundling up in order I just take the card & mail for that slot as I don’t do overtime.

Is it any wonder we have a climate crisis this person must go through two trees a week in DIB'S P739'S CARDS sorry but I knock twice only and then fill the cards out!Postmangit wrote: ↑10 Dec 2020, 19:48You are right this Christmas work wise is horrendous, packets, parcels & letters everywhere, it’s all overwhelming. I just prep put a p739 card in everywhere that has a parcel or packet then bundle my walk up as normal but just take the p739 card & corresponding mail with it.

Are you saying that you leave the mail for places that doesn't have a parcel?Postmangit wrote: ↑12 Dec 2020, 04:49I don’t. Don't think he fills out the card, just puts a blank one in. A lot of people do this, some turn letters, some write a 'P' on the letter,k979aaa wrote: ↑12 Dec 2020, 05:01Is it any wonder we have a climate crisis this person must go through two trees a week in DIB'S P739'S CARDS sorry but I knock twice only and then fill the cards out!Postmangit wrote: ↑10 Dec 2020, 19:48You are right this Christmas work wise is horrendous, packets, parcels & letters everywhere, it’s all overwhelming. a lot of the old timers who have been on the same round for donkeys manage without doing anything - horses for courses.

It is easy to jump to conclusions is it not this is why I don't like masks as they harm the environment god knows how many trees these things have cost their demise to end up on a gear stick on a Royal Mail van!yellowbelly wrote: ↑13 Dec 2020, 16:10Don't think he fills out the card, just puts a blank one in. Re: Square peg in a round hole
I've been confused all the way through this thread, this is the only conclusion that I've come to. Alternatively is the OP saying that putting cards in the slots saves time as opposed to turning lketters? You still have to look at all the addresses on the packets whatever way you do it.NewPostieUK wrote: ↑12 Dec 2020, 22:53Are you saying that you leave the mail for places that doesn't have a parcel?Postmangit wrote: ↑12 Dec 2020, 04:49I don’t. Added to this, I've had a partner that uses 739's to mark packets but scribbles the house number on the bit where you fill in the address when needed thus rendering the card useless if you actually need to use it. He'll then just discard the 739 into the pouch pocket again and again and then when I reuse the bag on another day I might pull it out of the van and a hundred used 739's end up on the street.
Can't stand the w****r!

Why can't RM have a small app on the PDA that uses GPS to identify what delivery point you're at. At the DO it could perhaps have the option for you to select what's needed, (either something too big for a letter box and/or that needs a signature)

No reason why in the future every parcel can’t be scanned once it reaches the DO and it automatically logs it to your route, a route which also notifies you when you’re close to a known dangerous dog, it could tell you where to park for loops etc.
Other couriers who actually invest in their product have packets tipped from the truck onto conveyor belts which automatically scan the parcels from barcode readers as it travels along the belt.
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

In theory it must be possible for MCs to have automated sorting of small parcels down to walk level

I’ve just watched an interesting programme on how they make quality streets, the machinery is so complex and clever.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑14 Dec 2020, 06:15In theory it must be possible for MCs to have automated sorting of small parcels down to walk level
What we’d need at RM would be a doddle by comparison. There’s no reason why machines can’t prep letters/catalogues etc straight into pouches which you just load straight into the van. There’s no reason why all parcels couldn’t be barcoded and machines (lightly) stamp them with a number so you know what order to do them in.
The technology is there it just requires that horrible word ‘investment’

On the flip side if that were to happen, if say your shift was 8 hrs long you'd have the time getting to and from the start of the walk and the time loading the van out of that, the rest you'd be out deliveringHTPostman wrote: ↑17 Dec 2020, 20:05I’ve just watched an interesting programme on how they make quality streets, the machinery is so complex and clever.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑14 Dec 2020, 06:15In theory it must be possible for MCs to have automated sorting of small parcels down to walk level

I'm a new postie and was trained to put a card in when there is a parcel. Works for me as I never run out of cards on a walk.

Very true. Sometimes I think being on a 5 hour a day contract has its plus side too.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑17 Dec 2020, 20:35On the flip side if that were to happen, if say your shift was 8 hrs long you'd have the time getting to and from the start of the walk and the time loading the van out of that, the rest you'd be out deliveringHTPostman wrote: ↑17 Dec 2020, 20:05I’ve just watched an interesting programme on how they make quality streets, the machinery is so complex and clever.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑14 Dec 2020, 06:15In theory it must be possible for MCs to have automated sorting of small parcels down to walk level

We aren't meant to do this as cards inevitably end up being posted and confused customers turn up at the delivery office expecting a parcel.PAClark543 wrote: ↑17 Dec 2020, 20:43I'm a new postie and was trained to put a card in when there is a parcel.
