Re: Is seniority illegal
Simple. Seniority or manager's discretion? which is fairer?
New starters put into our office on easier walks and left on it for ages. Moaners never moved whilst quiet grafters moved here, there and everywhere. Extra tasks given to the same people everyday whilst others just say no to it and are left alone.
It will be another nail in the coffin if we lost seniority. No seniority will mean, quiet guys put on all the crapest walks and given extra flex and moved at a managers whim. Moaners, slow people and difficult people put on easiest walks and left alone.

Re: Is seniority illegal
I've done 45 years service in the same office, but due to a unwritten local agreement ,I've been leapfrogged for a EVR, under the guise of being on the wrong shift and being on a different budget, sound fair..how would you feel, apparently the late shift in our office ,all 14 of us ,are not part of the office ,even though the early shift live on the s/a & o/t of our shift, and the whole office share all vehicles, but apparently we're a separate entity because of an unsigned or agreed local agreement implemented to suit the union of our office has they are the main benefactors of the EVR stitch up..I mean set up. Disgruntled & invisible.

Re: Is seniority illegal
At any office where you've more than one shift, each shift will have its own budget

Thats all right then , so you don't have seniority of office now its shift Governed , so office re- picks and any chance of changing shift is not attainable, yeah local agreements that don't help anyone and pigeon hole workers into shifts , not exactly equal opportunities in union terms surely..?

Re: Is seniority illegal
Seniority only applies when it comes to picking dutys if your office is doing holidays by seniority then well..that ain't right and shouldn't be happening..

Re: Is seniority illegal
If there was no seniority it would be chaos. Duties aren't equal, they never will be. If there was no seniority how would you ever decide as a manager who does the easy rounds and who does the crap ones? It would be a free for all with constant fighting.
Not to mention older postie's would have no protection and could end up on a brutal walk with endless flats.

Re: Is seniority illegal
Lack of seniority would lead to favouritism with those who are all over managers like a rash being rewarded with easier duties. Would also lead to people not freely voicing there opinions on work related issues with fear of being put on least desirable duties.

Don't know if they do the same in DOs but in MCs on any given shift each work area also has its own budgetTonibell wrote: ↑09 Dec 2020, 12:54Thats all right then , so you don't have seniority of office now its shift Governed , so office re- picks and any chance of changing shift is not attainable, yeah local agreements that don't help anyone and pigeon hole workers into shifts , not exactly equal opportunities in union terms surely..?

Re: Is seniority illegal
I would say in my experience it is not Length of service that gets rewarded but those who's face fits better and those who suck up to the gaffers that get better rounds or if the gaffer is your mate, they only use length of service when it suits. I've seen blokes getting retired on I'll health because they cant find an easy job in the office but then you see people on collection who shouldn't be on the job. This should be illegal.

Re: Is seniority illegal
I know 72 rounds spread between 2 offices but am very near the bottom of the great seniority ladder (5 years service).
There are some in my office who have 40 years seniority but have only done a handful of rounds. There’s one woman who’s very proud that since she joined in 1970 something she’s only ever done her round and constantly tells you how to do your job.
My point being some of those with the most seniority actually have the least experience when it comes to rurals, town driving, businesses etc because they’ve only ever done a couple of rounds out in the suburbs.

The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

Re: Is seniority illegal
Long term I can see there being an end to fixed walks. If letters and flats eventually get reduced in the number of days they're delivered and RM get barcodes on every parcel (something every other courier has done for years) then with the right software they could have walks dynamically generated each day
