The bizarre thing about American politics is that the default position is so far right that if Biden was placed in a UK party judged purely on his past history and voting record he'd likely be a Tory but most Republicans think he's a militant lefty socialist.

What I mean is, had the announcement been made a week ago we may well have ended up with another 4 years of the megalomaniac that is Donald J. Trump in the White House. Just saying........

Then again, mail-in ballots were filled out and sent long before the announcement, and the overwhelming number of mail-in votes for Biden would've still tipped the election in favor of the former vice president. Even if the announcement was made much earlier (say, two or three months ago), Trump would've still lost the election. That's due to other factors not involving his p*ss-poor handling of the pandemic. (Hat tip to Professor Allan Lichtman. )

Oh well, with the embarrassing Four Seasons Total Landscaping press conference over, and any potential recounting that would likely add more votes for Biden (even with the Supreme Court not helping Trump's lawyers), Trump will only hope there's enough faithless electors to cast their votes on December 14th to keep him in the White House. But he needs a lot of faithless electors to help him. Good luck with that!

Valid points PBD, as someone who despises Trump and all he stands for I am delighted with the election result across the Pond. Was a bit of an un thought through knee jerk reaction to the vaccine announcement yesterday. Hopefully the in coming President can restore a degree of dignity and responsibility to his elected position.

Me too. And I really believe he would rank as one of the worst presidents in America's history. As bad as Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon (in his second term), and Herbert Hoover. And Trump would rank almost as bad as the worst of them all: James Buchanan.

Back on topic: Forty million doses of the vaccine developed by Pfizer/BioNTech will be available for the UK by Christmas. Maybe this current lockdown will extend up to that time?

And the flu vaccine does naff all for the 650,000 that die from flu around the world in a bad year (source:WHO). I’ve never had the flu vaccination; I’ve had flu and am still here to tell the tale.
I have serious misgivings about any medicine rushed to market in such a short space of time. There are past examples we all know about where side-effects can be really serious. I’m sure women who took Thalidomide for morning sickness would never have done so had they thought there was any risk to their child.
I would not be in the priority groups for this vaccine, so by the time it’s available to me, we’ll hopefully know more about potential longer-term side effects

You may not have that choice, if western governments follow the path that Denmark is going down (and they are widely viewed as one of the more liberal European countries)

The new ‘epidemic law’ (epidemilov) would replace an emergency law passed in the spring which gave the government extended powers to intervene in society in order to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some areas in the proposed law that have raised eyebrows include:

People infected with dangerous diseases can be forcibly given medical examination, hospitalised, treated and placed in isolation.
The Danish Health Authority would be able to define groups of people who must be vaccinated in order to contain and eliminate a dangerous disease.
People who refuse the above can – in some situations – be coerced through physical detainment, with police allowed to assist.
Medics have voiced their concern that the proposed law will give the government too much power over healthcare

P13, of course the number of deaths from flu would be huge if there were no vaccine. But the vaccine is not a so-called ‘silver bullet’.
The point I am making is that a coronavirus vaccine, even if it becomes widely available, does not mean that nobody will ever die with Covid. People need to realise this. Even the makers of the Pfizer vaccine are only claiming 90% effectiveness
